Best basic tuner to work with EGR delete?

Now that I have been thoroughly informed on the EGR system and the soot problems it causes, on to the next question.

Different folks of course recommend different tuners to work with an EGR delete. I've tried to read up on all I've seen mentioned, and don't feel I'm getting or at least not understanding all I need to.

I've read about the XRT Pro and the Smarty Jr which seem to do similar things, but they don't talk much about EGR / DPF deleting and how their tuners work to allow that.

Can anyone shed a little more detail on that subject?

There's another one, too, can't remember what it's called, but their website has VERY little detail info.

I'd sure appreciate it if someone could tie those ends together for me -
what the tuners do that allows the EGR delete and I suppose the DPF delete, too.

Sounds like it can't be done "cleanly" without a tuner and from the multiple horror stories I've heard about EGR caused problems, would have to believe it worth the $ for a basic tuner. All I'm interested in is better mpg - and less soot related problems. Do NOT want to risk trans damage and don't need any more power.

Thanks to anyone who can explain in some detail how the tuners work to allow those deletes.

EDIT: Found this link which pretty much covers my questions, except it doesn't mention whether the DPF, and/or other parts of the exhaust system, needs to be replaced with straight pipes, or whether the sims just go in place of other sensors.
Also read the Delete on the Cheap link that talks about removing the cat and the DPF and replacing with a straight pipe & SIMS kit.
More loose threads!

Efi autocal lite or Raceme both will do the deletes for the $500-600 range. New smarty tuners will not do deletes but used SmartyJr's are out there that will.
All the above fills your requirement for a basic tuner and will disable the egr and exhaust systems and allow you to delete them.
H&S will do it also but for more money.
Lots of info about sims in the 6.7 tech section along with a whole bunch more on deleting and such.
For what a used Smarty Jrme going for you can get EFI and if you just want to delete and have a tow and mileage tune they have a autocal lite thats a little cheaper.

EFI LIVE-Basic to whatever you want, for the most part. You can start with the low end tunes, but, I'm guessin' you will get the 'bug' and will want to keep building....Try ANARCHY-Lots of good things about them here.

Was hoping to find an H&S such as the XRT Pro Street that accepts their Overdrive software, but that tuner seems to have been discontinued. Looked at the Mini Maxx that supposedly replaced it, but wow!

So still looking and trying to learn.

Another option would be to do the Delete on the Cheap method for the DPF, and then do something with the EGR without a delete capable tuner, even if the CEL remains. Getting rid of the CEL isn't worth $400+ if that's the main downside.

Yeah, H&S wouldn't be considered a basic tuner. You can find used H&S tuners that will do what you want. New models are out there that will do so also. You just need to know who to ask (not me...).

For now just unplug the egr and you'll be better off. Then make the decision as to which route you want to take.
And visit the 6.7 tech section and read up. Good info there and nobody seems to know where it is...........
Basic tuner to me means no special features. Used models sell for dang near the same as new.
Check Ebay and Craigslist too. I found a used Smarty Jr for $350. They're out there just few and far between. Now just need to do the deletes ;-)
Just make sure its unlocked and NOT a US emissions compliant smarty. (If it has "US" in the serial # it CANNOT do deletes)
Both can be verified by snapping pics of the unlocked screen and serial #.
I bought a SmartyJR on here for $350. Keep your eyes open and you might find a deal. THe Smarty is pretty simple, and it worked great for the deletes on my truck.
