Bedside weight capabilities, and towing doubles

Hey guys,

So I want some opinions or solid info, hoping someone actually knows.
I am wanting to know the weight capabilities of the bedsides? I see a lot of guys with ladder racks carrying carpet and such. I have a rack that sits on bed rails that I put 2 atvs on. Each atv is around 400 lbs. I do this and tow my 24 ft camp trailer behind it.

I did this in my old 1/2 ton ram too.

I am now considering selling one of the atvs and getting a 2 seat regular rzr800. They weigh in about 1k lbs. I want to keep my trailer, I like the size and set up if it. A toy hauler is in the future, but not for a while.

Think the rack (which is all steel and wood platform) can hold the atv and rzr? Mostly concerned about that much weight on bed.. Would it be better to run some braces down into bed and distribute some weight there?

Other option would be towing my little atv trailer behind camp trailer.. Camp trailer has electric brakes, and I use an equalizer hitch for it. Has anyone towed like that? I know it's legal here in ut, and the length I'll be in limit. Camp trailer is less than 6k lbs. and truck is a 2012 3500 mega cab.

Thanks for any info!

Nothing huh? No body knows about the weight capabilities? What about anyone that has towed doubles?
I would try a different rack- check out ATV Racks.com- Your ATV Accessory and ATV Trailer Source I had one that fit 2 ATV's side by side while pulling a 33' TT behind. A little bit of cash but a GREAT rack! I dont own it anymore as I have a 5th wheel toy hauler now. IMHO I wouldn't even think of putting that much weight on my bedsides.
Ya, I got a rack now, just not sure if a rzr would be safe up there.. Plus it'd be heavier on one side as they load from rear.

So u guess I'm leaning towards giving towing doubles a shot.. My travel trailer is 5400lbs 26 ft total length. And atv trailer is maybe 13 feet total, maybe 500 lbs. atv is 350 and rzr is 1000 lbs. so total back there is 1800 lbs.. Equalizer on first trailer with electric brakes (it's double axle too) does that seem like it'll be safe? I can put the atv in truck bed too and rzr only on little trailer if needed..

Any thoughts? Anyone done something like this?
I would double tow it. I would double tow with my above mentioned rig plus a boat behind the TT.

I would be a little afraid of that much weight on top of the bedsides.
I don't know anyone that's double towed.. How do they act? That back one get squirly at all or do they go pretty good?

I know if probably just drop back trailer then park tt.
Mine wasn't too bad to double with. Boat never got squirrley on me, but I guess that has a lot to do with what you are running for a hitch and sway control on your TT.
rzr hauling

I have a 2012 crew with a 8.5 flatbed on it. put an xp 900 and haul my 24ft.Travel trailer behind it. Went from Billings Mt. to The Oregon coast. It was a little hairy. So I stopped and bought a EQ hitch it helped, But I have since sold the travel trailer and double tow with a 5th wheel. Much better. If I were to have kept the travel trailer I would have put Tembrens or air bags on it and I think it would have been better. Also towed this set up from Mt to south west Utah in march wasn't nearly as bad as Oregon. Oregon roads and speed limits cause a lot of traffic issues compared to Utah.Good luck!

Great, I got a wdh now, thinking ill move it back of tt and buy a new heavier duty one for truck.
Hi Chad, a regular RZR 50" or a 800S 60" will fit in the bed of the truck. A 900 @ 64" will not. Make a set of pads to go in front of the wheel wells and drive the RZR in, over the wheel wells and tie it down.

It however will not fit in your mega cab with the 6.5' box. But, with the tail gate down, it should. Not knowing your TT tongue length and LP tank locations, etc, you probably will need a 8' box truck. A RZR is 8' long. Now you might consider removing the tailgate, building a couple of pads for the front wheels and extensions for the rear tires and you can probably get it done.

In most if not all states pulling doubles with ball couplers is not allowed.

You might go to the RZR forum and ask for input there. I have a 5th wheel and double tow with no issues.

Thanks jlb.. The legality of it in utah is not an issue. And I plan to use a weight distributing hitch on both if needed.. Just concerned on the safety aspect if double balls.

Ya, mega short bed has some compromise.. I was considering building some ramps to bring the front tires up to cab height having rzr on angle. And be able to shut gate. Id like to get it in truck for when I go to mtns. And glad to hear an s will fit in width wise, as I dune most of time.

Can't leave gate down as the jack is right there. Can't even get it down all the way hooked up.
Thanks Chad, The RZR site I referenced will have a bunch of guys that do in the bed and tow a TT.

I have been doing this RV stuff for Years, and I understand the tongue jack location. Maybe a couple of extensions for the rear tires that would allow the trailer jack to fit between the wheel extensions. (a couple of 2x12's in the bed)

We considered the Toy Hauler route, but being retired, we spend a lot of time in our RV and either quality or livability of a toy hauler did not fit us.

We really enjoy our 800 S LE.

Thanks again, I've been searching there to get ideas.. I understand what u mean with the wheel extensions- good idea.

Toy haulers are pricey and we really like our trailer now. Not owing anything on its nice too. Want to have another kid before I loan for a toy hauler.. And when I do it'll be one with seperate garage. Still can't decide on bumper or 5th wheel. Bumper I can still use my rack and take more toys.. Decisions decisions.

Glad u like the S. Everyone's all about the xp. And I don't think the suspension on it will be as good for mtns.
Hi Chad. A friend of mine who owns a short bed truck, a RZR, and tows a travel trailer fixed his towing problem this way: He built a trailer tongue extension that bolts to the frame of the travel trailer and hooks to the ball coupler of his travel trailer. He also built a 'rack' that allows the rear tires of the RZR to ride on angle iron 'extensions' instead of directly on the tailgate. This device is attached to his truck by removing the gooseneck hitch turnover ball, and sliding in its place a piece square tubing that is welded to the frame work of the 'extensions'. This approach would not help you with the towing-double situation, but would help with hauling a RZR in a short bed truck and pull a travel trailer. I can try to attach some photos....wish me luck on that...
Pics would be nice. Sounds like it works.
Chad, I am not having any luck posting pictures. Maybe PM me an e-mail address and I'll send them to you. Don
should not be an issue
My thoughts are to build a ramp/rack to drive up that'll put the front tires just above bed top, this will give at least a foot and then do some extensions as mentioned for the rear tires.. With tailgate off.
