Friend of mine just called...2005 with 127k miles.

27 degree startup yesterday, kinda started with a what sounded like a bang. Idles smooth. Ran around all day ok. Today started ok, but white smoke for the first 10 miles. Ran around all day smooth idle.

Tonight it idles smooth, start fine, but white smoke on accel.

Injectors was my 1st guess but it idles smooth.

Sounds like an injector. He could have had fuel leak into the cylinder before starting and had a partial hydrostatic lock which could have caused the bang.

after five road miles does the exhaust smell like raw diesel?
not good.

nozzles start pissing at higher rail pressures. when they piss at idle rail pressure, you have living hell

Based on the info you gave:

The bang was the fuel from a bad injector leaking into the cylinder and firing off when it was compressed. The white smoke on acceleration is a dead give away, an injector is hanging open.

Thanks for the replys.

At this point, the truck is parked until next year. Think he's gonna take it to dodge or cummins themselves to check it out. He's scared of meltdown at this point, so it's not be driven anywhere soon.

He has an appt with dodge next week lol

Cummins Rocky Mountain won't touch it because its a Dodge.

Truthfully told him to take it dodge to unload it for a new one. Been reading and reading on here and the other cummins sites....looks like once injectors go bad, the truck is never the same and it opens a whole can of worms.

Remans are usually junk. New seem to be better.

I have 139k on mine and thank the lord has been good so far but I drive mine like an sometimes, he babies his and his took a poop at 127k. Makes me kinda nervous about mine :)

injectors can take out other stuff if you dont catch it right away, or choose to ignore it. but if you didnt wash or burn a cylinder a new set of injectors from a reputable company would do wonders, especially with clean fuel runnin through em.

Filtration filtration filtration. First most important things on these injector eaters. If she runs good then no need to worry. But if signs show why even wait. If you break your leg you don't wait. The truck is telling you its sick.

any blowby?

and filtration is definitely not something you want to wait on. filtering fuel after signs of injector failure wont do anything but take away from the injector fund. if no signs of injector failure, filtration can and should be done to prolong their life. when i got new injectors i didnt install them until the AD was on.
