Hi everyone, I just bought a 2005 Dodge 3500 and it seems to run and idle well and I think has lots of power. It has 150,000 kms (95,000 miles) but pours oil out the breather tube at the rear of the engine on the drivers side. I don't think it smokes too badly if any worse than healthy diesels. I bet it would leak 3 litres/quarts in 400 kms (250 miles) of highway driving. Is this motor shot or could it be something more simple? Thanks in advance - I am a diesel newbee and figured this would be a good place to start.

Does it idle rough? It sounds like you have a dead cylinder with 0 compression. When the cylinder doesn't compress it shoots blowby into the crank case causing oil to blow out the vent tube. The most common cause of this on the 05-07 trucks is from an injector that stuck open and washed down the cylinder walls. Typically this happens to the #6 cylinder.

On the '05's it's a 7/70,000 powertrain warranty, so at 95k he's out of warranty.

Yeah, that is the Chrysler warranty, for sure that's out, but cummins warrants the engine to 100K miles, take it in....

According to Dodge.com........

'03-'04: 7/100,000 Cummins warranty

'05: 7/70,000 powertrain warranty (no additional Cummins warranty)

'06-'07: 5/100,000 Cummins warranty

Thanks again everybody, it looks like I will be picking up the tab on this one. One more quick question. I plan on keeping this truck for awhile so when they have it apart should I get anything else done - better injectors or anything like that? Thanks

:hehe: Those of us who got a late '05 build, missed out on the plastic IC ends and got the g56..... the late '05's were just like '06's without the body style change.

From what I heard, Dodge changed warranty stuff around trying to save a buck.

I kinda think us '05 guys did better than the '06-'07 guys whose powertrain warranty expired with the 3/36,000 bumper to bumper, but you '03-'04 guys definitely made out the best in the warranty department.

You dont have to prove any maintenance, find another dealer. They've naver asked me to prove maintenance and I have had 3 injectors and a rear main replaced at 2 different dealers with no questions asked.

I just took mine in for an oil change (old friend for years) and he told me I have a slight oil leak right between the pan and the backside of tranny. He wiped it down for me and told to come back in 4 or 5 days to double check. We are moving into our new home next week and where we are presently living, don't have a garage. I have 117,000 miles on it and it runs great.
Would this be the dreaded blow by? I guess I will just have to check it out next week.

i could be but it also could be a rear main seal leak. is there oil sprayed anywhere else near the trans or cross member?

It looks like a little is on both? Mechanic said could be the trans pan gasket? (probably not) that could be spraying. Or, (probably right) the rear main seal. If it is the rear main, what's the average cost. Break it to me gently, I just retired!!!

If you have any oil coming from the bell housing area around 100K miles it is most definitely a rear main seal. My truck has a small drip there but it may only drip once per oil change... so as long as it isn't pouring out it is nothing to worry about. The pan gaskets do fail occasionally as well, so you need to see whether it is coming from inside the bell housing and dripping out the inspection cover or if it is coming from the pan and running down the bell housing.
