If you want to race then most guys will say switch to a built auto, but that is expensive, and if you can launch and shift a manual good enough its just as fast, my truck had stock everything with a smarty and mp-8 with a clutch and was running 13.20's all day long and thats just as good as an auto will do

Ok, If I go with an auto, I was going to get a tq and vb and then when I can afford to, go billet. I know for a auto to manual swap its best to find a donor truck, or someone who already has everything ready. Im in college right now, and having a cummins isn't really a hobby, it's more of an addiction lol. I just want to hear from both sides and see what people think the best transmission type is.

IMO manual like you said are fun to drive and cheap to fix but for other stuff a built auto is better

i would only want an auto if i was building a race truck. But for a daily driver the 6 speed is a ton of fun to drive and it just feels more like a "real truck" when ur bangin through the gears and the turbo is spooling up and down. Plus it stops the old lady from taking it to the grocery store

anyway, just get yourself a 6-spd and a 3600 double disc clutch and you will be good to go! double disc clutches will allow you to slip the first disc to build boost and dump the clutch to let the 2nd disc grab and launch the truck.

build up your auto, with the amount of time and money you'd spend finding a donor truck, replacing worn parts and swapping everything in you could easily have built a auto that will hold more power

Go with the manual, automatic is better for racing or if you have a bad knee.

I don't regret the manual swap I did in my truck at all.. I love it! I just like to "drive" my truck and choose my gear. If I wanna make the turbo scream I can. The only thing I'd change is going to a 6 speed!

Ya my favorite tranny is the nv5600 so far and i know its hard to find parts for but i have never had to, but my nv4500 and g56 is a whole differnt story i could keep them together

If I swap, Im going to try and find a nv5600, My dad has an 06 with the g56, it just feels so much smoother than any nv5600 I have driven. Ill try and look for someone who has a swap ready, or ill just search for a wrecked truck or something.

Maybe you could meet up and trade it.

I say build the auto though, mainly because parts are alot more abundant and, if built right, will hold more power than the 5600

Another vote for an auto here. I was always a manual guy until my buddy talked me into this truck and told me to just stop ing and build my tranny up. I now love this thing. I can pass anybody with a 5600, they just cant find the gears as fast as i can. I also pull heavy, between 16-20K and my auto has not miss a beat. The 5600's have problems with output shafts shearing off too if you have alot of power. Auto is cheaper for money and can be built to handle more power than any light or medium manual truck trans.
