Which one do you think is more fun? The manual takes a lot of shifting since it is a six speed and in town that might get old if it is a DD. The autos are less work in stop and go traffic and can be built to handle insane power.

I like my manual.

Auto will be much faster than shifting

depends on how talented you are with a manual. If i were drag racing/pulling, etc i'd probably get a built auto, but i think the sticks are just more enjoyable and fun to drive. Lets all be honest here, if we were looking for a 1/4 mile rocket, we wouldn't be buying a 7000+ lb 4x4 pickup as a platform (not saying it can't be done...just saying it can't be done on the cheap). That said, there are a few guys out there clicking off some pretty impressive times down the strip with 5 and 6-speed trucks, so i wouldnt count them out. If you are looking to build something yourself, just remember that a
$5k plus tranny will hold a lot of power, but a $1,300 plus clutch will do just about the same. As far as cost effective i think the manual wins on that one too.

I see what your saying, I have a 6.4 powerstroke with intake, chip, and exhaust right now and enjoy the auto tranny for the most part. The only reason that i am not happy with the auto is the common late lockup on hills as i live in a very hill oriented area. Well that and the manual trucks seem to sound a little better. thanks for the input

I wish I had gotten a stick. I don't mind shifting at all. As far as the late lock-up try running in tow/haul mode all the time. It helps that trans run cooler and lock up is pretty quick in the 5R110. The pick-up at the fire house is the same 6.4L w/auto and that's what we do there.

I don't exactly do alot of towing, just looking for a fun/quick truck to rip around town with.
It's def not going to be a manual!! I can tell you that much! A built auto is gonna be alot more fun!! I have 700+HP 6spd and it's not all that around town! It's a slug to get moving b/c you're constantly shifting and the gears from 2-4 are extremely quick... 5th and 6th is where the manuals shine in making power!! If I get another CR it'll be a built auto!

I've got the option to drive both auto/manual and I'm pretty much always driving my '99 auto even though it's pretty much stock and gets worse mileage than my 04.5 reg cab... I've put nearly 100k miles on my 04.5 and it's not bad but getting in stop and go traffic sucks!! Or taking off at the red light when you have a car riding your arse, knowing I can blow the tires off and black smoke the entire intersection I just ease on and pay em no attention hahaha.

If you plan on building it and making a 700hp truck and plan on racing whether its in town or on a track.. it would be cheaper building an auto.. With as many manual trannys you will be going through lol.. I have a manual and love it.. but i pull alot and if im racing, its uaually with my buddies and its usually only 5th and 6th maybe 4th.. but slammin low gears is where they like to disasemble themselves... For racing.. built auto.. putting a nasty clutch in a manual just makes the tranny ur weakest link..

There were a handful in there. I bet there are more than a handful of broken BUILT autos. I don't think anyone will agree that an auto is stronger than a stick, especially in stock form. There are people building G56s now too

Looking to get myself into a built cummins. Any input on whether i should be looking for an automatic or a 6 speed manual? I don't exactly do alot of towing, just looking for a fun/quick truck to rip around town with.
From your statement a auto will be best for you. Auto trans are alot quicker than manuals. Theres is alot of wasted time shifting and the turbo looses boost between shifts with a manual. A auto has fast shifts and constant power to the groung for raceing or just riping around also if it is a built tranny than its great for towing anything you want.

If you have trouble driving a manual in stop and go traffic you definitely need an auto. I've been driving a standard since I learned how to drive and it's a piece of cake anywhere for me. Not as quick as an auto but once it's rolling at about 50mph all bets are off on what's quicker...
