I recently put my truck back to stock, I had a 5" turbo back straight pipe (no muffler) I bent it up a little bit taking it off, I was thinking about just ordering a new exhaust and was thinking about going with a 4"? Just wondering if the sound is any different? if anyone has experience with this....I like loud....LOL

The 4" is quieter. I had the 4" and went to a straight 5" and made a world of difference. It was a lot louder. My buddy just swapped from a 4 to a 5 as well and he said the same thing.

I have run both.. 5" will be deeper, especially with a tip. 4" sounds good, not too loud, but good. I am running my factory down pipe and then to 5" the rest of the way. Only running the factory downpipe because of the strong diesel smell these trucks produce. I do like the sound of a 5" str8 though!!

Haha.!! Before I put my factory downpipe back on, mine sounded like a logging truck!!! I was running 5" str8 to an 8" tip. Now running the factory DP, to the rest of that same system and it sounds good, not loud until in the throttle good and no drone!

Mine has a 4" straight pipe, turbo back with a 6" tip. Its quiet in the truck with the windows up. When the windows go down, its loud! And I love it. Just cruisin through the neighborhood on my way in town it echoes off cars and privacy fences, so Im sure the neighbors love me.

I have run a few exhaust combinations on my 08 Ram. First mod was a stage 1 delete. Truck was slightly louder. Then a stage 2 delete. Truck was obnoxiously loud and droned while towing. Stage 2 delete is esentially a straight piped truck as the stock muffler/resonator does not control sound very much. If a guys is bobtailing mostly then it is still loud but tolerable inside the cab with the windows up. lol If I had stayed with a 4 inch system I would have installed a muffler to help get rid of the drone. I tow most of the time and do not like my trucks to drone.

Based on my trucks the 5 inch systems did not bark as bad as a 4 inch system...more of a deeper rumble with the 5 inch pipe.

I'm looking to order an exhaust here soon I like a loud exhaust but enjoy a quiet cabin while crushing the highway would a 5" with a muffler give me what I want? I have zero experience with diesels and exhaust notes.

Thanks for reading,

I have an AFE 5"tbe/6" tip with muffler. Its quiet at idle and if your just putting around, sounds good and fairly loud when you get into er. Its hard to explain but its not a real deep tone, its sounds pretty decent but for myself i am gonna get rid of the muffler to get the deeper louder sound. Lol

Ok well since the original poster is getting all sorts of answers, I will ask question I've been wanting to know related to this. I have just the delete pipe with the factory downpipe and factory muffler. I'm looking for some more grunt. So will slipping in a muffler delete pipe make mine louder? Or do I need to do the down pipe?

Downpipe will make a bigger difference. The factory muffler doesn't hold back much noise. Deleting egr cooler will add some sound too...

Run a straight pipe, and keep the factory downpipe. You will have a nice tone, no drone and a descent smell. If you install a downpipe, get ready for an extremely strong eye and nose burning raw diesel smell!

Hmmmmm...... You must have had a really bad exhaust leak, I have never had or heard of anyone having that problem. I had both 4 and 5 inch down pipes on my 2006 also. (Maybe apples to oranges to a 4th gen). The 5 inch was a silverline and the 4 inch is afe.

If the stock pipe sealed up it must have been a bad aftermarket down pipe that gave you a leak that bad. Just my 2 cents.

I think I'm just going to keep the 5" straight pipe, I didn't know that deleting the EGR would make it sound better???? I was thinking about a single 8" Miter cut stack but holy $hit would that open an all out exhaust war on the forum! HAHA thaks guys for your input.....

Apples to oranges between a 4th gen and an 06!! These motors use a different controller an they fuel really heavy. The smell wasn't in the cab, it was out the tailpipe. There are several threads about people complaining of the strong "raw" smell these trucks produce. EGR cooler delete will definitely change sound. The cooler muffles sound somewhat!!!
