The quad is a little less roomy then my crew cab was, but my 12 year old, and 9 year old kids and my 80lb 5 year old lab have survived the trip from SC to NJ, PA and back twice. :) When you hook a load to the truck and pull up the hills you will forget about everything else and smile though.

i've had great luck with my truck. run the front end (ball joints etc) until they crap out and replace them with aftermarket ones. they cost about the same as the stock ones after install and they hold up better. thats my experience anyways. the auto's are the weak link in these trucks but i have 80 on mine with a lot of towing and it's still going strong. if you can go for a manual. i'm planning on buying a second gen with a manual just for the reliability. but these are great trucks. the cummins is amazing. anyone see the 1.4 million mile cummins in diesel power this month? its rare but that says something about these trucks. =)

I just got rid of my 04 powerjoke and purchased an 06 QC with a 6 speed. Its the best thing I could have done. Dont think twice and go for it, you wont regret it. As for the front suspension Carli makes a great track bar & nice set of balljoints that will take care of those worries.

Run as far away from those 6.0s as you can

My buddy has an 05 with over 20k in warranty work done. New motor, couple turbos, wiring, injectors, etc.

Have seen others say they have 30k in warranty work.

Know a few people that sold them cause they couldn't afford to have their truck in the shop so often.

Problems have been mentioned like lift pumps, front end, u joints, etc but no huge major problems.

Love my 03. Been a great truck so far.

Not a huge Ford fan myself, but 7.3 and the Mustangs I like.

Like everyone has said the lift pumps on the 03-04.5 are awful, Dodge does not even make them anymore they are that bad. Front is not the strongest but the auto trans, well the 48re at least, is better than what people give it credit for. The real problem is a lack of driver self-control with a truck that can go from bone stock to 480rwhp with a single programmer.

Yea it's just that 6.0 that scares me. 100k warranty goes early sept. and Ive been hoping something happens gasket wise to hopefully get those headstuds installed and possibly egr delete. Talk about a ticking time bomb I'll be looking into spending 3-4k to get the parts and labor once warranty's expired :$: As for my thread pirate uncertain, mega cab's come short bed from factory, but feel free to ask q's as were both thinking about going to the darkside

Well there is alot of guys that are going to tell you what you should Do. I would say call around to the Good tranny shops and tell them what you want it for and they can point you in that area.. If you are not putting up big numbers then just a Single Disc T/Q and V/B can get you where you want For under 1500$

thanks for your understanding Csquared.
If I bought one with an auto, What am I looking at $$ to beef up the auto. I am not into big power, Just pulling the TT at 65-70.
My horses never go that slow in the trailer... unless I'm on a two lane road! Any truck in my sig can exceed the speed limit up the hills here in WV.

If all you are pulling is a TT ~10K lbs, you won't need ANY mods. My truck stock can pull my TT at any speed I desire here in the foot hills of SC.

Having just traded off my '05 F350 DRW Lariat for an '06 QC dually, I think the answer you are looking for is this. The 5.9 will stand up in 'stock' form and stay together with alot of the mods. (unlike the 6.0) The real downside... if there is one... is that the Dodge tranny (AT and STD) does require upgrades with the additional upgrades you make to the 5.9. With the Ford, all you had to worry with was the engine. With the Dodge, upgrade the tranny with the engine. Other then that, I've seen several posts on here about what I would consider 'small' things. Hope that helps

I'd hold out for the 6-speed. If you're not going for all out speed...IMO, you can't beat the manual. I'd definitely try to find a truck that did not have any mods done to it. The previous owner might have been riding around with the Edge cranked up all the time...the tranny might be toast.

Run some good fuel filter(s)...change the fluids out regularly, and enjoy your truck for many, many years.

Pardon¿
Maybe you can explain the mods required for the Dodge manual tranny?
... Or are you just talking about the clutch?

I'm sure even the stock Ford clutch will not stand up to 450 HP or more.

get rid of the 6.0!! especially if warranty is gonna end! trust me!

just joined the forum ,and am going to look at 5.9's myself this weekend, because my powerstroke (6.0) can't last longer than 2 months without going to see the dealership. I have under 59k miles on it, and have had close to $25k worth of work done, not including what they are about to start ripping into after dropping off my truck again today.

i have an 03 6.0, with a june build date, ONLY MOD IS EXHAUST, and i regret buying that truck everyday. you name it, and i've had it reflashed, replaced, cleaned, rebuilt, and replaced again...

So here I am, ready to buy a real RELIABLE truck, and also want to know what to look for. So far I'm going 04-07 5.9 only, and with an auto. not looking to mod it at all, just want something i can drive everyday with a 6" lift and not have to every worry about, and be able to tow my 5.0 to and from the tracks without worrying.

so am i on the right path?

I guess my only questions would be, what kind of a warranty does dodge have for these trucks? i don't want to buy something without some kind of warranty. any dealership offerered extended warranties out there???
