It appears my alternator crapped out.
Only registering about 10 volts on the factory volt meter.
Stopped by a jobsite this morning and truck barely started; able to at least get back to the house.

Too much work to do right now; I'll dig into the problem tomorrow.
Take the alternator in to have it checked?
What other culprits should I look at if any?

Rig has 180k and I did pro-actively change the alternator brushes about 15k ago.

Thanks

is the tach working?

The pcm controls charging, it will not allow the alternator to charge unless it is getting a tach signal from the ESS. no signal, no charging.

Yep - tach is working.

Just started it after being on a charger.
Reading a little higher at 12 volts.
Enough to cause the idiot light to go out - I'm assuming this is just because the batteries have been hooked up to the charger and are at 12v's.
Wish these things had an amp meter.

Plan on driving over to the O'Rileys and have them check it.
They have an alternator for $130 + core.
Lifetime warranty for whatever that's worth.
Any input on quality of O'Riley alternators?

Mine failed a few months ago, I was too lazy to do it myself so I just had them check it down at Advance for free... sure enough it was bad.

I have a 2000 with the same issue, new alternator, new batteries, still not charging. How do you check this PCM mod.
