Im sure this has been talked about before but could you guys give me some input on what to put in this tranny? What convertor do you guys recommend? And what internals should i replace? I have a guy that will pull it out rebuild n put it back in for 1000. Sounds kind of cheap so i need to see what he plans for internals but he told me i have to supply the convertor. He said one of my drums is bad from what my truck sounds like. 1st-2nd shift slips grinds and then bangs in. So i guess a new drum and bands and steel planetarys

To be honest a rebuild kit is Cheap 400.00 so if he's not charging alot it really doesn't sound bad . You can do a search here and see the different Torque converter's Spec Rite , TCS, there are several other's all goes off what you want to spend . Because you can drop a easy grand .

I just want to do it rite the first time. Im selling my street bike. So ill have like 2000 to spend. I have an he351 a 3200 spring a bd fuel pin timing is bumped n 1/8th and like 21/2 turns on the fuel screw. Id like to be at like 350 hp so i need to do the tranny to hold that. What brand rebuilds should i be looking at? And carbon fiber bands?

a good converter is well worth doing now. the factory ones eat fuel.

A lower stall speed single billet tc from a name brand maker is probably good enough. Revmaxx, goerend, and many others all make a decent converter. I do not think the 1st gen trucks ever really make enough power to need a triple billet tc. I have seen little on what is good to add to a 518.

Have you considered installing a 47RH so you could also have lockup? That would require a custom harness which is available or some toggle switches.

My truck is my dd so time is an issue. And the funds to do such a swap are also the issue. If i had the cash id do an nv4500 or 5600 swap. But thank you for the input on some tc brands to look at. Also what stall rates should i be looking at and the %? Something close to stock? Just more reliable? Im still not at a complete understanding of how n auto works ive been doing some reading but definitely no expert lol

Basically the stall speed is to high. It is also very inefficient.

As I recall the (2nd gen) stock tc is about 65% efficient. A good aftermarket tc is around 90% efficient. I only know the 1st gen tc is also sloppy.

Keep in mind I am referring below to my 2nd gen truck which is different from your 1st gen.

My tc is supposed to have a 1,800 stall speed. I might have considered a 1,600 stall instead but I got it used. Compared to stock this is a night and day difference.

Once I floored the (still stock) truck at a stop sign. the governor defueled and the tc was slipping at about 2,300 rpm. The truck sat there barely moving and I was red faced.

The stock tc would slip at 2,000 rpm and the truck would barely accelerate. The triple tc at 2,000 was increasing in speed. I went from going about fast enough to pass a turtle at 1,500 rpm taking off from a stop light with the stock tc to normally keeping up with traffic at the same rpm with an aftermarket billet tc. MPG could increase 1-3 mpg depending on how you drive.

Stall speeds are really something to talk about with whoever makes your tc.

:agree2: after I went with a nv4500 I saw a good 2-3 mpg gain and I have been driving a 518 since 92 and keep millage numbers on every tank. I am sure a good converter will help enough to pay for itself, just like the clutch did. i am running a ats converter in my 05 and it also is a big improvement over stock. if funds are short a good converter and a shift kit will go a long way in helping. get your gear ratio, tire size, and type of driving you are going to do and check around to see what fits for you.

Thanks for some input guys i figured out im going to get the converter from eric at the hungry diesel a 1600 stall dpc. Does any body know what parts swap out from newer tranys that would be good upgrades or that i should be looking to replace? I remember reading somewhere on here about planetary gears should be swapped out for the newer ones?
