My number 6 piston on my 97 crumbled, would have to pull the block to bore the cylinder.
I have a buddy with a 93 12v and a 01 24v
Would rather just drop a working motor in and avoid rebuilding my 97
question is what would be the easier swap, newer or older?
would like to keep my p-pump if i can

The 93 would be easier if you don't like all the electronics of the 24v.

You can P-Pump either engine but the VE IP will make about as much power as the P-Pump.

If your stock head and timing cover are in good shape, you can swap either short block in and literally change nothing in the engine compartment.

The blocks on all three engines you've mentioned (the 1st gen VE, early 2nd gen P-pump and the later 2nd gen VP pump engines) are all interchangeable (not identical, but interchangeable)

The late 2nd gen VP engine is likely a STORM block, so look for 53 cast into the front driver side of the block. Assuming equal price and equal condition, I'd go for the 1st gen VE engine as the earlier ENCORE blocks have 1mm larger main cap bolts and no crack prone 53 STORM blocks were made in that era.

I think that is why I was wanting to keep my pump because the rest of the truck is set up to run it.
Looks like 01 is missing a cam lobe for lift pump.
Do you know if my lift pump will work on the first gen block/cam or if it would be better to also swap cams as well on either replacement block option.

You can swap your existing cam into either block. Both have the lift pump mounting boss cast into the block. Not sure if the first gen cam is compatible with the 2nd gen lift pump (the lift pumps themselves are different between the two engines, but I'd bet the cam lobe is the same although I don't know for sure).

If you've got the coin, might be a good time to upgrade camshafts (both Colt and Hamilton make good drop in cams for the 12 valve).

Yes a 2nd Gen LP will work on a 1st Gen block.
