I just bought a stock except for a stack and new ball joints 1996 12 valve cummins. Anything you guys would recommend to do to it performance wise or even body or light wise? i dont know much about cummins i was always a powerstroke guy and since the 12 valves all mechanical i was wondering what you guys would recommend?

Remove the fuel plate, turn up the star wheel and smoke screw and plug the waste gate. Should be good for a 100+hp.
Gauges first (boost and EGT at least), then transmission upgrades...auto or manual?

Stock auto or stock clutch aren't going to take mods well.
Trans or gauges, doesn't really matter...they won't cause damage...adding engine power first does.

Take care of the KDP. It can cost a lot of $$$ if it lets go.

Step one. Stand back and take a good long hard look at your wallet. If it is not full do not proceed to step #2. If it is full prepare to see it empty quickly.

Step 2. Install a 3K or 4K GSK. This will allow your truck to rev faster before it defuels. If you have a 5 speed you may not need this. With an automatic that defuels noticeably by 2,300 rpm it makes a big difference. If you would ever rev past 3,000 rpm (actually 3,200 but consider possible tach and driver error) you also need to install upgraded 60# valve springs. If you do not you can have pistons and valves meet in the expensive way. Do not forget that you will need 6 new valve covers. This is the ONLY safe power mod for a stock automatic transmission. It does not exactly add power but it does wake the truck up.

Step 3. It is time to upgrade your automatic transmission or to get a better upgraded clutch. With more power the stock clutch is likely to slip and the stock automatic is likely to demand a rebuild.

Read this if you have an automatic.

Step 4. You now want to install gauges. You want a EGT gauge to tell when you are in danger of melting your pistons. You also want a boost gauge. With an automatic a transmission temperature gauge is wise. A fuel pressure gauge while not mandatory is a big help when you have any issues.

Step 5. Look at all of the money you just spent in the previous 4 steps. It was a LOT and you have added no power. However, your truck is now well prepared for more power to be added. You nice fat wallet is now a lot slimmer.

Step 6. Determine what you want to do with the truck. If you will be towing, daily driving, or racing can change what you want.
When you know what you will do to your truck click on this link. ---> http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/9...ssion/314312-beginners-thread-read-first.html You will find a lot of answers including some hp recipes and it explains about the KDP.

I don't know how to paste a link but there is a beginners thread that is really helpful. I have same truck and working my way through it. It is very helpful.
I am also deciding what to do with a 94 single cab 5 speed. Read the beginners thread -- a couple times. I think you will be pleasantly surprised how much power these 12 valve trucks can make with simple mods.
look at beginner threads.
