I am the owner of a 96 2500 4x4 cummins diesel 5 speed manual

old farm truck ....driveshaft center support bearing has play...i can move it slightly back and forth ,up and down.....and the intermediate shaft has ridiculous play in the u-joints......

two questions.....is the rumbling most likely from the center support....when it is rumbling vibrating and i push in clutch it goes away...
most likely the center support???.....

other is can i remove the intermediate shaft and still drive it ?
will it destroy the tranny or transfer case?
parts guy says their is a number of different options for the parts in the intermediate shaft...can i remove to take to parts store and work on.?

any help is appreciated...

i really dont have any help for you, but i am very interested as to what your problem is. ive had a vibration for probably about 12,000 miles now, a little in third and loudest in fourth at 1,500-1,650. nothing in 1,2, and 5. bothers the heck out of me cause i cant figure it out. got it out of nowhere on the highway one night, next morning broke the center out of my 2nd clutch. turned out the input shaft bearing was bad. sent it to my tranny guy, all new bearings, told him to go over it real good, he found that 5th gear teeth were worn slightly, so it was replaced. installed a south bend dual disk, full kit. also installed a new tranny mount as it had a broken stud. so far since its been back together ive pulled a 12k pound trailer with it. noise hasnt gotten any worse or better in those 12,000 miles, but it just worries me as to what it actually is.

Support Bearing

Yeah, I changed my U-joints using hammers and vices. The Center bearing is the Larger one that not in stock at Autozone.

So, I skipped it for now. I believe you will need access to a Hydraulic press :banghead: I hate to pay someone to work on my truck, but for center bearing, I think I will have to pay someone else:S:

hey rockin.....your right autozone wont have the center carrier bearing...for my truck at least..had a internal bearing measurement of 1.578 er sumin like that...it wouldnt even come up in their computer....
shouldnt need a press...after taking off the rubber housing and seperating the bearing cover assembly thingy....it tapped easily off with a hammer and punch alternating sides....didnt even use a torch er nuthin.....still waiting for the part to come in ,,so havent put it on yet.....I hate payin people to do work i can do on my rig too...i found a post somewhere on here which gave me the confidence to do without a shop and a press.....i love this forum!

good luck!

well

u-joints for sure....and carrier bearing....first time in 15 years doing a u-joint replacement...one of the bearings fell out and i pulverized it installing the cup...had to take it out and use a bearing from one of the good ones i took out..oops..

just be sure to mark the driveshaft well and get a piece of pvc the right length and diameter if you are gonna replace the carrier bearing...i lost my magic pvc tool and used two pieces of maple and a couple rubber bands....dont ask how..
