Well I have a 93 Ram 250 with only 40K on it. Its a really nice truck & I plan to keep it for awhile. I only wish it had a 5.9 diesel LOL.

Anyway, I start it up & drive it a few blocks & it will die. I can only start it if I hold it to the floor. After doing this several times, it will suddenly run fine for awhile, but today I noticed the exhaust smelled like it was running rich, so Im thinking something is causing it to flood out. Anyone experienced this before? Also, how do I get the codes out of it? There is no check engine light on but that dont mean anything.

I have 35 years experience as a mechanic, so I know cars pretty well, but of course this is one of those annoying "intermittant" problems so it is hard to diagnose.

One thing I dont like about these trucks is they dont have fuel filters. They rely on the fuel pump sock to clean the fuel. I am wondering if the sock has disintegrated & is allowing crap to get to the injectors & cause them to not shut properly.

Any ideas would be great.

there should be a fuel filter on the frame by the transmission cross member. as far as the main problem your fuel pump could be the problem. if you know someone with a scanner this would help to rule out the computer. other wise you may have to find and replace sensors and see if it fixes it.

of course, your gas motor IS the problem. investing any time/money in it will only be a bandaid fix.

starting it with pedal to the floor is indicative of a flooding issue. pedal to the floor on those older FI trucks cuts the fuel injectors off, which is why you are able to start it. my guess is a bad injector, or a long shot would be improper fuel pressure via a weak pump or clogged filter.
