Hi All, well it sucks that this is my first post, but Ive come into what I think is a simple issue with my truck, that i cannot seem to convince myself of what it needs.

OK. Here is what happened.

-On a 300 mile 1 way trip. 1 sputter at 75mph at the half way point.
Truck sat for 2 days, drove 10 miles 3 sputters, sat over night
Truck drove 10 miles more sputters, sat for an hour, got 3 miles into a trip, ceased to run.

What ive done:

-Pulled and replaced fuel filter, re primed pump truck started ran idled fine so i drove it the rest of the distance. 5 miles lets call it.
-Later that day i go to make the return 300 mile trip, truck starts idles perfect, get 5 miles away, sputters and dies. No start.

I tow the truck 300 miles home, and it starts to drive it off the trailer.

Yesterday evening, i crack the bleeder between the lift pump and the injection pump (which is a stock VE pump) manually prime, fuel comes out i hit the key starts right up, i close the bleeder. Truck idles flawlessly for an hour with revs and holding higher rpm's...this frustrates me...

So i get in and go for a ride. i make it a half mile before it sputters and dies. wont start. i get out pop the hood crack the bleeder manually prime, leave it part way cracked hit the key. it fires right up i close the bleeder and drive back home, it sputters a few times and idles for 10 minutes before dying. I call it a night, but am convinced if i repeated that process it would start.

I was thinking lift pump, but wouldnt my crank case have diesel in it?

Any suggestions? gas cap? should i pull the fuel sending assembly out of the tank maybe the sock is clogged?

The truck was not dripping any fluids at all...

I welcome and appreciate all your suggestions, sorry for the long story haha i assure you it took much longer in person!

Pic of the rig (its got an offset 5" cat style stack and no ladder rack now)

Take both lines of of your lift pump and put a three foot hose on the pressure side and attempt to blow throw it with your mouth. If you build no pressure and air passes to the inlet side pump is shot. If that checks out pull the sending unit and see in the inlet screen is plugged. Good luck

OK, replaced the lift pump. Sputtered once or twice after i re primed it, dumped the fuel out of the new fuel filter, no water, re filled it, fired it up, has been running fine since.

I drove the truck around the block, rev'd it, held the pedal to maintain 23-2500 rpm for periods of time, no sputtering, after sitting 2 weeks, i threw the new pump in, primed it with the bleeder cracked, and it fired without issue the first time, (god i love the cummins) i just want to make sure im all set and wont have any other drama related to this...

i guess im not convinced that the sending unit in the tank doesnt have an issue and or an o ring on one of the push to connect fuel lines is leaking (if they are its an air leak, as the truck isnt dripping, the top of the tank isnt wet, and from what i can see none of the lines or frame rail areas where they run are wet)?

how common are any of these problems?

I intend to drop the tank this weekend to pull the sending unit per Jordan's Suggestion. Can i pull the sending unit without dropping the tank (not including cutting a hole in the bed!)

Sounds like water in the filter but you said you dumped the filter out and checked for water and there wasn't any.

I agree on the fuel tank module, plugged screen or not sitting on the bottom.

thanks sir!

one other note, is that it had 3/4 of a tank when it ceased to run, so it was not as if it had no fuel.

dropping the tank this weekend, hoping to find a clog, or an issue.

boy do i had intermittent issues that hold on to dear life just to mess with you haha

You might also check your FSS wire to be sure it's clean and tight. It's a know problem area also.

The bottom half of the module is on a slide so that you can adjust for depth of the tank, they will loosen up and slide up or even sideways and will show more fuel than you really have.
