I've got an 03 F750 and would like to do a repower.

It has a 24v cummins 5.9 right now.

Anyone have experience with the 8.3L and the DT466?

Is the 8.3 a wet sleeve? I know the 466 is.

I'm considering only mechanical engines.

I don't think the 8.3 is wet sleeve, but I can't say for sure. Every 8.3 I have driven has been a bit of a pooch. I believe the mechanical versions of both are p-pumps so a little extra power is well within reach

yes, the C8.3 is a wet sleeve

and depending on the config, both engines were dogs for what they are LOL

If your talking old mechanical (pre ~94 for the DT466, ~98 for the 8.3), they were both available with bosch inline pumps (only the later DT466s used a P7100, earlier engines used the bosch MW). some were P7100s, like you would find on the dodge 5.9, some were different models. but for the most part, as long as your not looking at the bottom end of the HP range of these engines, youll likely be looking at one with a 12mm pump which will easily make some more power.

Looking at later engines:

The 95+ DT466 went to electronic unit injectors, leaving not so much "room" on the table, though still pretty reliable, eventually taking another step in earl 2ks and going to VGT keeping the electronic unit injectors

the C8.3(now the ISC) moved onto the cummins CAPS fuel system which while working did "ok", but was pretty unreliable (caps pump failures are fairly common, dumping fuel into the oil!) and eventually moved onto commonrail in early 2k

The 5.9 I have now is a pooch. It's electronic and not too many options to turn it up.

If I repower with an 8.3 or dt466 would that be a step up?

Can they be modded to put out some respectable power?

I think I am limited to these two motors because of space......If someone knows of another option that will fit I am open to any mechanical engine that will fit.

I'll probably be adding a 10 speed eaton too.

I've driven both is similar specs. tandem axle dump trucks.. 8.3L with a 8ll and the 466 with a 13spd. The 8.3L walked all over the 466 similar weights etc.... But I'd look for a ISL!!! Its MUCH MUCH better. a ISL is slightly bigger but has a real jake compression engine brake. There is thread over on the TDR where a guy swapped a 3126 cat out for a ISL... i think there is a thread here on comp d where a guy p pumped a ISL... that would be my engine of choice!
Thanks,
Deo

I'm currently getting ready to try and put an 2012 8.3 into an 05 F750 that had an 5.9 in it. Asking to see if anyone followed up on doing this swap or not. Picking up the 8.3 motor this weekend hopefully. Get the f750 back in the shop towards the end of the month. The 8.3 has an 8LL already attached. Looking to swap out to non variable turbo and do a full delete on the emissions bs. And have a programmer on it. Going to be fun getting all the wiring working.

I've got a 93 F-800 with 8.3 and Allison, our Fire Depts 94 L-8000 tanker had a 8.3 with 6 spd manual.
Both are stock 250 hp but have good torque.
I'll take a 8.3 over a DT466.
