Im going to swap my 727 for an a518 for better mpg and lower rpms and was wondering if the gas a518 and the diesel a518s used the same rebuild kits and clutches with just different converters or what? Any help is appreciated, thanks

The overhaul kit may or may not be the same. Check with your supplier. The diesel trans will have more clutches and some kits will be universal where you don't use the extra clutches on a lower rated trans. The gas converter is different, but the 727 converter behind your diesel will be the same. The shift kits are different, a specific one for diesel.

Should you do it yourself? Should I do my own piano tuning? Pretty tough questions to answer without knowing anything about the other person's capabilities. How experienced are you and how much equipment do you have access to. You don't need a lot of special tools, but you do need a manual, a dial gauge, an inch lb torque wrench, and various clutch spring compressor tools. You need the savvy to be able to work around the special tools the manual tells you that you need. Specifically the tool for aligning the od components and determining correct selective washer for the od. You can do without them if you have a machinist level and a vernier caliper and use the output shaft for the alignment tool.

Okay thanks. Also do i just need to use a 12v source such as a toggle switch for overdrive

Yes, an on/off toggle switch will give you an overdrive switch, although that's a pretty crude setup. You have to remember to switch it off. You can get more sophisticated and use a pressure switch in the governor pressure test port.

The oe wiring configuration has a constant batt voltage to one terminal of the solenoid and you ground the other side to get od. But there's no reason you can't ground the one terminal permanently and switch the power source. Don't forget to fuse it.
