hmmm I have a 68RFE and dont worry one bit about it... best trans I ever had TBH. Sounds like your taking in too much interweb myths. Also what makes you think the 6speed is any better?

I get, I do. If you just want emission free and a stick, go for it! just don't fool yourself into thinking the reasons are because the 68rfe is a timebomb and the emissions stuff is actually a problem. Chasing that logic you are going to unhappy with the new truck for its "interwebs fact-checked Ackelses heal"
68rfe's are time bombs. When it comes time for a rebuild your looking at 7-10g for one thats worth a damn... 6speed, ya throw a 1500 clutch in it and be done...emmission stuff isnt a problem on my truck.. that stuff fell off many years ago. The problem is that the truck wont run with out alternative programming. And one day you wont be able to get it

What mods do you have done to your 68RFE?

It's the worst transmission I've ever owned by far made worse in combination by the factory shift points. I would pay good money to put a G56 in but before I go there I was going to try a new valve body and higher line pressures. I was also going to try making my own TCM tune because the ones that I have tried hold third gear way too long.

I have heard the 4.5 gen and up 68RFE are a different beast because of a new valve body and also better gearing.
Nothing... except a upgraded flex plate since the factor one cracked at 120k. 1-5 hold strong towing (at leaast my "normal person loads"), the gear ratios are just rights for the engine and 3.73 diffs making the perfect do-it-all truck, it runs cool all the time, shifts smooth.. I cant complain one bit!

Shift points? IDK, when im towing I use the shifter to hold gears, when running unloaded I typically don't care that it races to 6th, but if I did, I have the shifter. When I hit the back road to my house I habitually lock it to 5th and enjoy the rolling road. People are babies about this way too often IMO. Also a quick tune fixes the shift points if you really are that un happy with it.

yea at some point I would like to either modify the VB or get a full upgrade, but that's mostly just because I know I can...

Good looking truck btw... I suppose you could add a real truck bed (I mean long bed) to your "why you want to change trucks list"

That will likely be the reason if I ever do change trucks, a 8' bed that never has to be made! I cant stand my short box, but I have done too much to my truck to let it go now :(

Love the short box, 8ft with a quad cab is too long. I had a 06 powerstroke once with the supercrew cab and long box. Thing was a boat

I don't think many members here would buy a 6.4L powerstroke. They aren't exactly known as being a super reliable engine or easy to work on. Well, the diehard ford owners will tell you that once you've gotten proficient at ripping off the cab, they're easy to work on. The good news is, if you buy a 6.4L, you'll get very proficient at ripping the cab off relatively quickly it seems. They seem to hold power ok stock though.
Oh, dont be so "harsh" LOL!!!!!
The town I live in has those trucks parked dead all over the place. And the ones that still run throw GOBS of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ at them. Many still look like new but don't run anymore. Several owners told me the engines tossed parts all over the hwy several times. :poop:

I don't like the sound or smell of Fords.
LOVE IT! DAMN your funny!!!!!!! :ROFLMAO: (y)(y)(y)

Any other comments!!!!!!! ??? :D

Excellent reply and agree 100%. The transmissions are very good. They just were never designed for use in a diesel truck to pull heavy weight. Then owners turn up the power and blame the trans when it fails. Lower gears and more gears is what they need for the diesel engine. This is why RAM finally went to the Aisin 6 speed trans. It has ALL the bases covered.

I really think it would be a mistake... look for a new metric tuner and/or transmission swap and call it good. Lots of options still out there

I love the guys that say their 6.0L or 6.4L Powerstroke is "bulletproofed", so it's as good as a Cummins!

@caleb90, I think you are looking for the perfect truck. You are not going to find it...

I had a chance to buy a friend's 2008 F250 with a 6.4. It had 50,000 on it. He only used it to pull his horse trailer to horse shows a few times a month. It was mint, I had drove it a few times before and it sure was nice. Way better shape then my 05 with 275,000 at that time. It just had this one thing I couldn't get used to. At idle it would just intermittently cut out. I passed on it at $15,000. I probably should have bought it and flipped it, but that wouldn't be cool. With such low miles I thought it was at least a $22,000 truck. I probably could have bought it and got another 50,000 miles out of it if I was lucky. I just couldn't get past that cut out and had heard so many horror stories about 6.4's.

I've had a few Cummins with autos and I shared the same fears. I always drive them like there was an egg between my foot and the skinny pedal. I actually never had any tranny issues. Front end issues were another story. I have a manual now and it's nice. Not as convenient as an auto. Idiots behind me are always following too close when I take off from a stop and when I shift they nearly rear end me then rage around me flipping the bird or screaming "get yo slow ass off the road". Sometimes it's amusing but gets old. My truck has the NV5600. And it rattles a little. I don't know if that's common but it's always done it and never been an issue. I've got around 60,000 on a LUK clutch so I'm waiting to wear it out or destroy it so I can upgrade to a dual disc and turn up the tuner. Which would I prefer? I think at this point in my life I'd probably rather have a built auto. The fact is I don't have that kind of money though, so I'll stick with my manual. Clutches are cheaper then built autos.

Took me 4 to 5 months to find each of my truck. I would have gone with 2nd gen but always way rustier and no crew cab.

Not really. But it isn't that bad if a job. Just be careful to secure the steering wheel to the steering column so it cannot spin. Dont want to damage the clock spring.

Are you thinking of the 48re? I was under the impression the 68rfe was build specifically for the 6.7 Cummins. Hence why it wasn’t in any gas trucks. Or am I wrong?

I know too many guys on a 68rfe with well over 200 even a couple almost to 400k on the OEM 68 to believe it wasn’t built for a diesel.

I've done plenty of studding and misplacing egr's on the 6.0/6.4. Imagine spending $5k plus just to make your truck reliable. No tuners, go fast parts, wheels and tires, ect. Those ford guys are a different breed.
