OK so I'll try and keep this brief. I'm rebuilding my nv4500. It's a 2002 4x4. Setting up the end play on the imput shaft. Specs as we all know is 2 to 6 thou. With no shims I'm at 15 thou. I added 13 and I'm at 2 thou.

My question is, I had a shim pack of 43 thou before. With a total of 6 thou endplay before I tore it down. I did install a new main shaft. I'm just concerned as I'm only using a shim pack of 12 thou to get to my desired endplay. Is this a normal thing for new mainshafts?

Depends on machining of the shaft if everything is seated properly it sounds like you are good to go. No need to worry about how many shims you had before its irrelevant you have the end play required you are good to go

Appreciate the reply. I understand the variables with a shaft change. Basically wanted a second opinion.
I didn't know if it's uncommon to have such a small shim pack. The imput shaft bearing retainer bearing cup is seated. Along with the matching bearing. The rear main shaft bearing is seated. So I think I have everything right. I believe if I did have a problem it would be with those components.

Sounds like you are good to go. I have seen shim packs very lots no need to worry

This is a great question and I’m also interested in input. My shim pack changed from .043” to .030” and I thought that was a lot. I used a Torque King mainshaft and new 1.375” input shaft.

As long as the input bearing is seated on the input shaft and the rear main bearing is seated such that the thrust washer won’t spin, I guess you should be fine.

Yep. And I’ve done them where I had to machine the cap to get enough play.

Appreciate the imput from yall. Just for safe measure, I pulled the imput shaft bearing retainer and verified that the cup and bearing was well seated. I can see the other bearings are seated with a keen eye and a flashlight. Reassembled and still at 2 -2.5 thou end play. So I'm gonna run it..

Thanks again for the info.
