The 4x4 light on the dash will not go off when it is not in 4x4.

The four wheel drive works fien when it is engaged at the transfer case. when you take it out, the light remains on and the front axle shafts connected.

I know this is something simple... but what?

Check the switch/plug under the truck on the t/case and make sure its pluged in and not melted to the exhsuast or something.

Mine did that, and the vacuum tube by the transfer case was sheared off. I repaired it and it works like a charm. Real easy fix - hopefully same for your case.
