I recently purchased my grandfathers 2004.5 Cummins 4dr long bed and have been doing the much needed maintenance after 242,000 miles. Needless to say it didn’t always get maintained and I just replaced the stock injectors and started to service the trans. That’s when I found about 4 inches of a snap ring in the pan. So now I’m weighing my options and I plan on putting it back together with a new filter and fluid as I need the truck for work. But I’m looking to swap in a manual instead of replacing the auto with another. I’m located in Oregon and willing to travel. Hoping someone on here might have the trans, interior ,shifter, hydraulics etc. I plan on using my tcase and getting rid of the garbage 2 piece driveline. Or just looking for advice on what route to take, I’m mechanically inclined and do have help when needed. Any input on sourcing parts would be much appreciated!

A guy named Jesse Salas around austin tx usually has all of the parts you need. He is on facebook market place with tons of parts for all years of these trucks. He even has interior parts, only thing i would advise you on doing different than what i did is, call driveshaft specialist in texas and get a custom one piece rear driveshaft ( i bought mine after i had the two piece cut. Also cant see if you have a 4x4 but just swap the female spline out in your transfer case, its not that hard and you can check the other bearings. The punch out that is in the floor board cut it about 1/4-3/8” of an inch wider than its stamped. I didnt and got to use tin snips to clear the shift tower(mutalated 3 fingers). If you have any questions dont be afraid to reach out.

Thank you very helpful information! I’ve recently started to look at buying a wrecked truck from auction to steal from. Only question I Have is I was reading about the swap in another thread and the guy mentioned he had a harness built for the APP module. I’m not sure what that APP module is I’ve tried searching but couldn’t come up with much. And for the transfer case what did you swap you female spline out for?

the broken snap ring is usually the wavy snap ring in the OD housing. it's easy to replace. i've had a g65 and a built 48,
I much prefer the built auto. I love my hand shakers don't get me wrong, but a correctly built auto is great. 150K on mine and it's been perfect.

I went nv5600 from 48re, the output shaft spline count on a 48 is different from a nv shaft. So if you want to keep your original transfer case then you have to swap out female slip joints in the transfer case. On the app module, i didnt do anything near that just stripped the harness down that went to the 48re, found the Neutral Safety switch wire, grounded it out and found the reverse lights and plugged them into the NV reverse switch. Then had my smarty mm3 programmer send me a manual flash for the ecm and it fired right up.

Im not to sure which snap ring it is doesn’t seem to be wavy I found about 4.5 inches solid of it in the pan. And as for the swap not sure if I want the g56 anymore possibly just use the nv5600.

between the 5600 and G56 i'd take the G56 hands down, get the later 08 version though.
the broken snap ring is very very common, it's in the OD housing. Cascade transmissions has some great teardown videos if you have the ability, pull the OF housing off and take it to a shop, unless you have a press, it's really easy with a press.

the one youre after is at the 4:11 mark.

Ok thank you very much I think I’ve got a gauge as to where I’m going from here on out!
