Off the top of my head: OD direct clutch pack going bad. Rear band bad or slipping. Rear servo jamming in bore. Forward clutch pack slipping.
or maybe the snap ring broke in the overdrive section, this is common on these transmission, like said in op post maybe the the servo is broke
Im having the same problem. Only mine as completely stopped going backward. All forward gears are fine. how difficult is the replacement process??? Is it something a novice can perform?

It is not the same problem if you have all the forward gears. If you have manual first and no reverse it is the OD direct clutch pack toasted. That will take some tools and knowledge to rebuild correctly.
Mine didnt slip. It just stopped going in reverse. I can feel it go into gear but it doesnt move. Took it to a transmission mechanic friend who checked it, said everything electrically is fine and that the servo is probably the cause of the problem. Just wondered how difficult it would be to replace it myself instead of paying $200 labor.

Thanks.

Either way, the OD unit has to come off adn the trans be partially disassembled. Yout can't pull the rear servo until the apply lever is removed, you can't remove the lever until the pivot pin is removed and that has to go out the back of the trans wiht the OD off.

Note that if the OD directs go bad you will loose reverse also and it will sound like it is engaging but will not move.
Im thinking that may be the problem... It just occurred to me to smell the fluid... It smells like burnt clutch discs. I think I know where my problem is. Unfortunately.
