Hello all! Unfortunately after dropping the pan today for a filter change I found part of a broken snap ring, which I assume came from the overdrive unit. I’m talking to the local shop about a rebuild, it was on my list for the next year anyway. Truck is bone stock with 170k, I have a cold air intake coming and want to do a small tune. I’m thinking a single disc TC because I’m not looking to make much more power. Besides a new TC, shift kit, and governor pressure solenoid, what else would y’all recommend I ask the shop to upgrade/replace? Thanks!

My 48RE lasted 325K. Like you, I run small HP tunes. MM3 from Rob has some nice canned tunes. He has an enhanced tune for 05 and UP 48RE. It's a game changer trans tune.

Here is a list of items we put in my 48RE. It shifts are FIRM with a shift kit and single disk billet converter. Goerend converter is a beast. My trans builder was impressed with it too.

Towing with MM3 trans tune and the rebuild is a dream. It shift fast and firm, no flair. MM3 tune fixed the shift points and down shifts to work correctly. I tow under 10K on a 50 HP over stock tune.

Performance Valve Body or shift kit.
Pro series 2nd gear band, Raybestos clutches,
Sonnex Billet Accumulator,
Billet front band anchor and strut
Goerend 15SS single disk billet Torque Converter, OL-12660, Stamp 11113-18,
One (1) New Borg Warner Pressure Solenoid (EPC)
One (1) New Governor Pressure Sensor (Transducer)
One (1) New Overdrive & Lock-up Solenoid Assembly & Harness
One (1) New Governor Solenoid Body Gasket

There’s no such thing as a “game changer” transmission tune for a 48re. There simply isn’t much to tune; almost all of your drivability and shifting is setup mechanically in the valvebody. Sure, you can tune the throttle valve and some minor things but it’s not primarily electronic.

I would upgrade all the clutches, adding more which is pretty standard.

Cold air intake is not needed, can actually make things worse.
Yeah, valvebody is brains of trans, invest in a custom valvebody from Dynamic or Goerend, discuss with them a decent converter/proper stall, Goerend or DPC, to match engine.
then dependent on driving style ie, if hard on the throttle billet input shaft is a good idea.
TCS servos, upgraded strut and anchor , to help avoid issues at higher pressures.

Thank you! I’ll be heading down there later today to discuss some options.

Cold air intakes not great for these motors? I’m just here for the turbski noises lol. I don’t thrash my truck hardly, mostly baby it.

The MM3 trans tune locks the converter in 2nd, changes the shift points (holds a gear longer when under load), and down shifts sooner. Remembering to put it in T/H is not needed.

I always find it of interest how folks can judge a change without ever experiencing it.

I posted my road test results a month ago. The stock, unmodified intake gets the best fuel efficiency and has the best filtration. Cummins did their homework on this device.

I modified the famous toilet flange CAI that attaches to the bottom of a stock air box. I tuned a couple of dampers to make it act like a variable runner inlet. It starts opening at 4 pos boost and is full open at 6 psi. Road tests showed a gain in FE.

🤣 Settle down hotshot. MM3 doesn’t have anymore capabilities than does EFILive or HPTuners. It’s not some magical tunah that overrules the FACT that you can’t really do much tuning on a 48. You can tweak some shift points, and the throttle valve, and OD. That’s it. Still, the Valvebody is the equivalent of a TCM and no amount of fluff by you will ever change that.

A 68 can be tuned. A 48 cannot be tuned anywhere close to a 68. Learn something before puffing your chest pal.

I didn't say or imply MM3 has magical capabilities. I understand these three tuning platforms have to deal with the OEM logic.

What I said, Rob is the only tuner I've found who includes ECU commands, down shift and such in his "shelf" tunes. The trans downshifts to keep the 5.9 in the power band without putting the peddle to the mat and the other features mentioned.

I didn't imply, mention or compare the 48RE can be tuned like a 68RE.

In my other life, we have been tuning electronic trans for years with HPT or Standalone PCS TCUs.

I stand by my statement, this tune by Rob woke up my 48RE. For Me it's a game changer.

It's easy to judge behind a keyboard without ever experiences the difference. I've been guilty of this once or twice.

Cheers...
