OD direct reaction plate step goes down

OEM 48RE OD direct clutch on left the change up on the right

single sided clutches hold great but don't take the heat during shifts

stack up as shown pressure plate on top step up

back to the compressor

new snap ring every rebuild

use tool as a stand

slide case over assembly look thru access hole

spread ring until case slides over

lift up on case until snap ring POPS into groove as shown

cover and gasket

use tool as stand again

single snap ring (47RE uses a flat and wave)

pressure plate step down

stack up clutches

stick bearing to hub with grease, poor pic but notice another OD steel installed on top of last one in clutch pack , leave out wire retaining ring at this time

OD clutch clearance selectable shim

place piston on clutch pack the cearance shown with the pick should be about .010 to .015" for best results (stock is usually around .025") adjust with selective shim shown in last pic

remove extra steel and install wire retaining ring

these have to align when installed notice

at this point the pin shown in previous pic will be aligned with hole test by turning piston back and forth it should just move slightly , this is the tool I use to install lip seals work around until seal slides in don't be in a hurry or force it (tool is actually a smoothed drawer removal tool from my old snap on tool box)

installed fully

intall a new gasket and bolt OD housing to main case

intermediate shaft rear ring gear

rear planet ALWAYS replace thrust washers they wear out quickly on 48RE

washer on top same as bottom

sun shell new washer notice how thick the 48RE sun shell is

front planet new washer

front ring gear specific to 48RE don't forget plastic insulator

snap ring , make sure you have a little bit of end play just a wiggle aprox .010" if it is much higher something is worn out (thrust washer or rear ring gear usually)

usually some wear here where the ring sits on the shaft causing high endplay

input shaft or rear clutch

this is what I use to lube o-rings and lip seals works great

work it in carfully with a tool to get that lip seal down

slide input shaft thru clutch retainer

belvil return spring

spacer then waved snap ring

the silver washer is an endplay shim you can get from superior shift technologies

backing plate step down against belvil

start stacking up forward fibers

snap ring is selevtive if you need to make an adjustment , this clutch runs tight but you should still be able to turn the fibers fairly easily

washer and rings

front clutch or direct drum

OEM inner seal and updated inner seal I have no idea why both are included in the kit use th wider one if it didn't come in your kit most shift kits include it

install outer seal on piston , lube it up and shimmy it in no tools required

foot press that I use , use your ingenuity to compress return springs and get snap ring back on

install fibers and steels , resist the urge to tighten up the clearance here they run loose , if you bing down the clearance when you put it in reverse you may get a BANG apply because the drum will apply before the band does causing the geartrain to rotate before the band holds it

clearance notice I changed to a thicker non wave snap ring , I know it might make it pop a bit when it shifts but the thick ring is much stronger

install direct drum over input shaft

wiggle and jiggle until input shaft fits in

check everything engages

intermediate band

installed top view

superior strut comes with the super servo kit make sure you dont intall it upside down it fits easily but POPS off when you put the VB on (not that I know from experience)

adjuster

alignment pins and pump gasket lube the case for O-ring

cleaned up pump body

bushing make sure it has the dimples .. a solid one witll be eaten up by a 48RE converter hub

drive it home sometimes I loctite it in

stake bushing

seal with green loctite

lube seal and bushing at this time

lube and install gears

pack with grease to create good pump sucktion at start up

pump bolts 21 ft/lbs **** use torque wrench very easy to warp ****

washer and rings

stator washer found on 48RE ... there is some debate over the use of a 47RE stator being stronger because there is no groove machined here ... some guys say that the added strength is worth giving up a small amount of converter pressure , I have used both stators interchangably without any problem ... I probably wouldn't switch it if I was putting in a stock torque but with a good single or triple billet I wouldnt worry about it at all

lube o-ring

carfeull install .. don't hammer it should pop in with a little hand force

pump bolts and seal washers torque to 21 ft/lbs

endplay I like .015 to .010 but the spec is WAY higher if you have NONE then you may be hung up on a forward fiber OR one of the bearings in the OD unit is upside down

THIS IS MY OPINION ON BAND ADJUSTMENT if you are not comfortable with it use the factory manual to adjust bands

on front band adjustment I like 1/4"

accumulator spring

better pic of shift kit cup plug

park rod feed it in and wiggle output shaft until it pops into place

hook VB on park rod

clip

torque bolts to 105 in/lbs , notice BW gov solenoid

filter

pan

speed sensor

Man... last time I cracked open an auto tranny, it seemed at the time to be much more complex than that... these pics probably make everything look easier than it really is... but its tempting me to rebuild mine myself.

I'm not a mechanic by trade, but I've done a lot of different things on cars and trucks as far as mechanics go (new heads, cams, turbo swaps etc). I'm of a very mechanical mindset and am familiar with the proper practices with antiseize, locktite, torqueing etc... and have a pretty solid set of tools.

Would this be something you'd strngly suggest against for a tranny newb like me? My transmission has been into dodge umpteen jillion times, and they refuse to fix whats not completely broke. It shuttles on/off throttle and into 3rd. Also feels like there is slippage. (Dealer has replaced kickdown bands, new solenoids and a new valvebody, and they assured me the clutch bands were fine).

Its a 2004.5 and has 44k mi on it. I dont expect it to drive and shift like a cadillac, but I am sure other people with equivalent truck... have much more pleasurable driving experience...

opinions?
