Hello all,
I am new to this site and wanted to share with my experience. I own a 95 2500 5.9 that I had upgraded to an ATS transmission with a valve body upgrade and a triple-lock TC with Commander This set up with a # 6 fuel plate and gauges cost around $8000. I had this upgrade in 2005 and wanted it to tow my 10k 5th wheel. At the start this new set up always shifted hard in every gear. I was always worried about the wear on transmission conponents because of the way the transmission was shifting. When towing my 5th wheel it felt like the truck wanted to pull the trailer off the pin in every gear. I had good reason to worry. 4 years and 39,000 miles after the install, the transmission snapped! I contacted ATS and they told me that I had a 3 year warranty with 100,000 miles. I was out of warranty. Right now the truck is dead in the water and sitting in front of my house. Ats said that they would help with the parts to a certain extent and we shall see. The local transmission shops all quaoted me around $1000 just for labor. I am now in contact with several transmission rebuild shops to include Goerend and DTT. I am not even sure I want to fix the ATS set up at this point. This is my first post (hence the name). I will figure it out. I was just sharing my experience.

Stock shaft? Hopefully its a clean break and didn't damage anything. If you just broke a shaft, I would rebuild it with an aftermarket billet shaft and continue on your way. No sense in going all out unless you really want to abuse it and not worry about it.

I would look at the way the TV cable is setup. I would blame the poor driving characteristics more on poor setup then a poor built. Its a shame ATS didn't set it up better though :(

(weird that ATS trans went boom and then they wont work with ya on the warrenty)
why is it so hard for people to understand that a 3 year 100k mile warranty is NOT good after 4 years? not to mention, breaking a shaft is not a warranty part. so ATS offered to help you out on cost of parts to rebuild it, even though it is well out of warranty, and you are crying why? did you let them know it shifted too hard? did you ask them to tone the VB down a little? if not, then it is your fault. they are not driving the truck every day, so they can't tell exactly how it feels. Why don't you take them up on the offer to help you on parts. And ask if they can lower the line pressure on the VB for you while their at it.

Not to come off on the offensive, but am I reading this correctly? I sincerely hope the "make noise on a forum so the company feels like they should give me a deal" mentality isn't at play here, because I don't work like that.
I was out of warranty.... Ats said that they would help with the parts...
How many of you have gone to a dealership a year after your truck warranty expired & gotten anything less than the privilege of paying full price out of your pocket?

Nonetheless, we've offered to help out & essentially repair it at cost for parts only, not even a labor charge, on a unit that's out of warranty by a full 1/3 of the original warranty period, not just a month or 2 - how are we the bad guys here? If you'd sent it in & didn't feel we were giving you a good enough deal or something, I suppose that's one thing, but a complaint in advance that's really about nothing more than us offering to help???

If you'll PM me your info I'll be happy to look up your original ticket.

Yeah I don't think so either....the way I read it is he just wanted to share his experience with paying 6 grand for a tranny that didn't last more than 39k miles. And since the warranty has ran out (time wise) he is looking into good transmission shops to either repair it or replace it.

the INPUT shaft broke. it's not like he slipped clutches or burnt up the TC, those are ATS parts. all he had to do was tell ATS is shifted too hard, or tell any transmission guy that and there is a VERY easy way to back the pressure off. INSTEAD, he decided to keep driving it (probably very hard) and when it broke 4 YEARS LATER he wants to cry. this is the most asinine thing I have ever heard. THEN ATS offers to help him get back on the road, and give him cost on parts to rebuild him a NEW transmission, just like if he was under warranty, broken shafts are not covered. he neglected to call ATS to tell them how it shifted, and figured that they could use telepathy to figure it out. this thread is a joke, bashing the guys at ATS because he was lazy and couldn't pick up the phone, then complaining about getting help from them outside of warranty.

You need to relax dude, he wasn't bashing anyone. Just telling people what is experience with it was. And if his tranny cost 6000+ dollars it better have had an upgraded input shaft.

Plus he only used the truck to pull his 5th wheel camper...so yeah he was really beating the crap out of that tranny. It's no secret that ATS has a terrible reputation when it comes to their transmissions. And just because they are a "sponsor" here should not mean that people can't talk freely about them.

are you kidding? you know you CAN break a billet input shaft WHEN you drive like an idiot and have a VB set to kill and and not "tow". so he "only" pulls a fifth wheel, do you drive with him? how does he drive it? I "only" sled pull and still can't manage to break an input shaft, so if he is "only" towing a fifth wheel, how do you think he drives it? talking freely is one thing, posting complete crap is another. I should take my 96 chevy in to the dealer, which I replaced the motor with a cummins, and tell them to fix my damn A/C. i've only put maybe 2-3 miles on it since 97 when the 6.5 blew up.

I dont see anything that ATS did wrong. Its out of warranty, so theyre willing to work with him some. Sounds fair. I will say that while shafts arent a warranty item, mine was replaced under warranty.

If one were concerned about how hard its shifting from day one, but says nothing, the company cant fix it. Hell, Id be happy if I could get an auto to live for 4 years :headbang:

Not really taking sides, just stating I dont see anything that ATS is at fault for. Let them fix it, and tune the valvebody to shift how you want it to.
