Hey guys, just bought another Cummins, now I have two '99 24v trucks, both 2wd. This one has 299k miles. This one has a tranny problem, when you shift from Park to Drive, when cold usually, it usually won't pop into gear, just like you're in neutral. Then when it does engage, you can drive, but it will slip out and seem like you're in neutral, does it when cold, not really when warmed up. It seems to slip more when turning left than right...weird as that sounds.

Anyways, tranny fluid level is fine, I plan on dropping the pan and changing ATF/filter out tomorrow. Adjusting bands couldn't hurt either? Been reading up on a bunch of threads but thought I would post my specific problem...any input is greatly appreciated!

I'm afraid you will find debris in oil pan. Sounds like rear clutch is on it's last leg.

the turning " left" thing is low fluid level.

Hey guys - thanks for the input. Since I just bought the truck yesterday I hadn't had time to look closely into it...and the previous owner said the tranny never leaked and fluid was always level.

Checked today, ATF barely on the dipstick. I got a filter/gasket from Advance, and a gallon of ATF, and bottle of Lucas. All the bolts on the tranny pan were hand-tight! Crazy...dropped the pan, there was some normal "graphite" looking metallic powder on the magnet, and one small fingernail sized piece of what looked to be a snap ring on the magnet. Nothing else, I was surprised. New filter, new fluid, and the Lucas, tranny seems to be doing much better!

Thanks for the input guys. Will be changing the Crank Position Sensor when it gets here. Dodge dealer wanted $135, Advance wanted $67, Cummins wanted $58, I got it on eBay for $28, new in the Cummins package!

So new fluid/filter cured it ?
mt 97 auto when cold you push the pedal down and it engages in gear, but when you let off and coast (driveway rolling speeds) it pops out of gear. Wait a second and it goes back in.

Gotta work out why your tranny temps are getting so high to burn your fluids in less than a week

Hey guys bought a 24v 47re back in March, thing would barley even move when I picked it up, but it was a good deal, I've replaced the fluid that could have passed as engine oil it was so burned and I changed the filter, made it 10x better but I'm having a problem with in and out of gears, when u put it into drive it has a hard kick and then it will move but then it will just fall out and rev up like u were in netrual, just reached the governor pressure solenoid that tells the truck when to shift, and I've seen a improvement when I can get the truck to go to 2nd, it does this reverse and drive where it falls out, almost like somethings not connected or what, let me know whatcha think thanks

Are you sure it is not starting out in third? When a check valve in the cooler is stuck open the fluid in the TC can bleed off and it will take 10 to 30 seconds to fill. Coiuld it be that?

My 47re wont even pull after it has sit in the drive for a few days. In the owners manual it says to put it into neutral and let it idle for a few seconds, I let mine idle for 30 seconds before shifting into gear. It doesn't pump fluid in park.according to the manual. I guess the xmission fluid drains back into the pan over time. I'm no expert on xmissions, matter of fact I'm pumb ignorant when it comes to them. Try this and see if yours works better.

If it is the fluid issue we are talking about above, forward or reverse does not matter, as it is fluid filling the TC. If bands are not grabbing drums that is possible but not likely to be both forward and reverse. Bad clutches would be. So if this is an issue after first starting, it sounds like due for a rebuild.
