So someday (hopefully soon) I will own a Cummins...I was originally going to go with a 3rd gen so I have been learning up on 3rd gens and performance parts for them for over a year but recently I think I have decided to go with a 2nd gen (probably an 00-02) so I need to start learning all over again:thud:

So I am calling on all you Cummins masters to teach me the way of the 2nd generation. I think my main focus needs to be the fuel system. Injection pump, lift pump, VP44, fass?! :ah: I have almost no clue what you guys are talking about, I don't know what goes where and what does what all I know is that the VP44 apparently likes to go out lol. SO explain to me so when I am ready to buy, I am ready to mod :thumbsup

make sure you have a fuel pressure gauge to monitor when your lift pump goes out.once that goes your injection pump is soon to follow, but if your like me it just gives you a reason to up grade it to the hot rod vp44 :)

is it common for the lift pump to fail? how do you keep it from failing?

what pressures should you be reading on the FP gauge?

The lift pump ($250.00 ish) likes to go out, which starves the Vp-44 injection pump ($1,2500.00) of fuel. Since the VP-44 is lubricated by fuel this is bad and will probably leave you with the joy of replacing both of them. Pressure should NEVER be less than 5psi at WOT.

Other than that you're on the right track (mostly with the decision to go with a 2nd gen, lol) Fass/Big line kit/gauge and you shouldn't have to worry about it again.

My fuel pressure sits at 11 at idle and only goes lower from there, but it does stay above 5psi, its been this way since i've owned it (1 1/2 yrs) and i've had no problems :thumbsup

The lift pump is what likes to fail on you which results in no fuel pressure to the injection pump (vp44).

The FASS system is what replaces the lift pump altogether. This eliminates the problem of it failing and trashing your vp44.

Order a Fass system or Airdog system and that will take care of all the fuel system issues. It's still a good idea to have a fuel pressure gauge just in case.

The vp 44 is the injection pump, it is a pusher pump rather than a puller pump and as such it cannot draw fuel from way back in th tank, therefore there is a lift pump to bring fuel pressure to the vp44. the lift pump is not a very great pump so it has a tendancy to take a crap. When it does ( and you dont have a fuel presure gauge to see it) the vp has to work overtime to pull the fuel from the tank causing it to burn up.

fass is a quality pump/filter system that replaces the the stock lift pump.

the vp 44 is very finiky, it uses fuel for luberication cooling and its pretty uch its life blood. There is a diaphram that can be ruined by excessive pressure from a lift pump. and at the same time, too low of fuel pressure starves the pump and burns it up (finiky to say the least right?)

there are many performance progamers/tuners and everyone has there favorite, on here is the smarty seems to be in the lead and a close second is the edge juice with atitude. the smarty is a reprogrammer whereas the juice is adjustable (i believe)

as with all trucks more air and tranny upgrades are a must.

good luck and happy bombing

bosch (who made the vp44) recommends no less than 13psi at WOT but i think 10psi at wot is acceptable

My advice..find out the fitting size on the VP44 at the test port, take a fuel gauge with you that fits it and check the pressure before you buy the truck. Like you see, strive for 10 psi or higher at idle and I would say no lower than 6-7 at WOT. If you can't test it, there's always the key on and off 3 times leaving it on at the 3rd one and look for codes in the odometer (to see if the VP left any codes ). If all looks good, once you get it , install a permanent fuel guage and update the lift pump to a better one. I installed the Fuel Boss from Glacier Diesel and run consistant 16-18 psi always.:)

Mine was pretty stout with RV275's and a TST fueling box, along with a little timing from the Superchips programmer.

My recommendations are (just my .02)

Make sure you have plenty of fuel...Airdog, FASS, or otherwise

Quad Adrenaline

Good luck with the tranny...

I will be getting a six speed when I get one. What stacks well with the smarty? I was thinking 100 hp injectors...what turbo would go well with those?

youll be running so rich. sounds like a great set up if you're running twins.

i have stock injectors w/ an hx40, rolls so much coal w/ the edge on 5 before the turbo spools. if i bog it in 4th, entire roads will disappear lol
