I have a 271D from a 2004 automatic with the 23 spline. I am looking at buying the 29 spline input shaft and putting it in. Anything else I will need besides the shaft? Do I just split the case and remove the snap ring holding it in? Can I keep the same seals?

Not 100% sure on the seal. What I did was put a dodge 271 behind a ford trans, input was all that needed to be change for that. I recommend a good set of snap ring pliers, the t-case needs to be almost complete dissembled to get to the input. Hard to go wrong but yeah lots of tricky snap rings.

If you don't like doing things twice, it's all about your budget. These guys have all you need to convert that 271D

I called around and from what ive found it should just be a straight swap.

I swapped it over took about an hour very basic. Have lots of photos. DO NOT buy the cheapo 29 spline input one thats under 200 bucks it is crap steel and big weight diffrence. Buy the Chrysler part numbered one.

Also check the year of your 271 case there are 2 designs. Pre-07.5 271D and post 07.5 Tradesmen model Dodge cummins with manual shift option. The cheapo input shaft sold by many companies is all the same shaft made by Yukon Gear in China. Physically they look the same but up close the machining is rough on the China one and is lighter in weight. Not the shaft you want with a 18,000lbs rated transfer case.
