Hey all. I have a '14 2500CTD with 5,600 miles on it. Just over hte last few days it has started to tap in the morning when cold. It is most noticable @ 1,200 rpm and the tapping is linear with the RPMs...which has be thinking valve, injector or exhaust leak (really not sure...just guessing). Frankly, I'm afraid to take it to the dealer...they don't seems to know much about the truck. It's not the standard diesel clatter. Its a new noise and it goes away after 5 minutes when warmed up. No power loss; just a tapping noise (I don't think its the DEF pump either). Any thoughts or experience with this? Thanks.

Our 13 LL has around 8900 miles on and it I believe that it does the same thing. I Just ignore it, and yeah the dealer might be a far shot if you want them to fix it. When you put our truck in gear and mash the pedal, its like a manual with a clutch that's only grabbing like 10% so to say. And they told us "oh it just needs to warm up" And it does it even when its 100 degrees outside.

Cold timing rattle may be just what it is, which is normal. Especially if it goes away after it warms up. Mine became worse after having custom tuning.

Do you think cold timing rattle would get louder with the exhaust brake? Had it on the other day and the tapping got 10X worse...at least for the first few minutes.

I only really noticed timing rattle on low acceleration placing a load when it's cold, thats when I really pick up on it. Yes there is extra noise at idle but I think that's with any diesel when they're cold.
By putting on the exhaust brake at idle, that may cause you to hear more since it actually gets quieter at the arse end at normal idle and it's not drowning out the noise at the front end. Not at high idle.
Just my thoughts though.
Cheers

I now have a 2014 with no issues at 10,000 miles but my 06 had a tap that would go away when got warm !! Then it did it constantly ! It ended up being a bad injector ! It sounded identical to a valve tap! I would keep an eye out to see if u get a puff of smoke at start up or a slight vibration at idle! If so maybe an injector! But these motors do not like to b cold so I hope it's just a little cold diesel rattle and nothing major !! Good luck

The erg is open a lot more when the engine is cold and depending on the erg position the exhaust note or engine noise can change quite a bit. There is less erg being used once the engine warms up and the noise goes away.

This would be my guess anyway. You could try unplugging the erg and plugging it back in to see if you can here the noise come and go.
