Having an issue with my truck, most notably on the highway. Seems to have lost some power, and has a 'surge' like feel when accelerating hard. It feels like I lifted for 1/2 a sec (lost boost too) then started accelerating again.

Has a smartys06 at 2. Monster ram intake, banks intercooler, air dog II. 3.73 gears stock exhaust, freshly rebuilt trans (about 4k miles on it), 34.5" tires. Seeing up to about 24-26# of boost on my gauge. On catcher3 it does about 38# boost.

I rarely get 'after' the truck as its my dd and tow rig, but I do recall it doing this one other time while towing up a steep grade and pulling about 8k lbs and accelerating HARD... but it was at about 42# of boost when it did it so I figured it was just some computer controlled cutout from the boost.

any ideas? kinda nervous, tried to do some searches found various issues and it just confused me. this is my first cummins. maybe clogged air dog filter? Posted this in the wrong section before.

truck has 105k miles on it. :banghead:

video of it. cant see it much on gauges, but you can hear it. thats full throttle too.

I'd fist verify that your air dog is working correctly. Perhaps swap filters and rig up some gauge for it.

no gauges. just the boost gauge. I bought the truck with mods etc. Havent done anything to it but an oil change.

how would I verify if it works correctly? the truck drives fine normally, it only does that under heavy acceleration in 3rd/4th gear. doesnt seem to in 1st/2nd.

Have to put a gauge on it. Any codes stored?

none. i've checked several times. messed around with options on the smarty too to see if it would alter the issue at all. stock tune, and stage 1 seemed fine. going past stock settings with stage 2/3 made it worse.

It really sounds like a lack of fuel. Generally it will throw a code for that though. I can't remember the number. But is rationality code about rail pressure and commanded rail pressure not jiving.
When the last time filters replaced on the dog ?

thats what I was thinking it was... but this is my first diesel so im not really sure.

not sure what you are saying about rail pressure :-/

never since I've owned it. put about 7k on it in a year.

When you get into it can you see any smoke out the exhaust? If it's totally clean on the higher settings you may be out of fuel.

Lower than normal boost and clean exhaust on a higher box tune indicate not enough fuel.

I need to get a rail pressure gauge on my setup. It also feels down on power at times and I noticed no smoke and low boost where at other times on the same power setting boost was up and smoke at the exhaust.

actually yea I did notice less than normal exhaust. I meant to mention it and forgot. that was another reason I had been thinking fuel issues.

so I should change my air dog filter. which one is it? there are 2 filters on it. are there any other filters?

Couldn't hurt to change the filter if it's been awhile.

I think my case is a weak fuel pump and/or a acting up cp3 FCA. My issue seems intermittent. Sometimes the truck takes off hard (with smoke) flooring it at 55mph. Other times it's a dog and boost is in the mid 20's and slowly builds.

looking at the exhaust for smoke is my "poor man's gauge"

Yes. Great place to start. There may be an additional filter if the po had a brain and used it. he would kept the stock fuel filter set up. Under the hood drivers side of engine. Just follow the line off the air dog. It could be there or removed. Most people remove them for unknown reasons.

changed the filters. no sweat there. truck started easier (about 1 second less on a cold start). does put out some smoke now under full throttle, havent been able to do a high speed test with it (rolling down the highway) but did do a 30-~80mph run with it with zero issues (no surge, hiccup, nothing). Where would the stock filter location be?

traced the fuel line to the front. found a metal line bagged. attached is a pic. any idea what it is??

Looks like the stock filter is out of the equation. That line is most likely the stock fuel supply line to your cp3.

nope... no issues at all. seeing 40# of boost in OD/locked in sw2.

should I run some kind of fuel additive through it at all. or diesel injector cleaner? if so what?
