Hi. First I want to thank the folks on this forum who have provided a LOT of great information!
I am swapping a NV4500 into my 2004.5 Cummins pickup, in place of the 48RE. Everything is going very smoothly. I installed the NV4500 yesterday, and as I was laying under the truck looking at the 48RE wiring harness, I started wondering if I could just unplug it and discard it. It has one plug at the ECU, 2 plugs located next to the brake booster on the firewall, and 3 plugs on a bracket at the drivers side of the bellhousing. I haven't read of anybody else doing this, most guys just zip-tie the extra wiring out of the way.
My concern is that this harness may contain other essential wiring necessary for the truck to run. Below is a photo of the harness.
I realize that the harness contains wires for the back-up light, neutral safety switch, and transfer case indicator, but I can wire these myself without having a huge harness left over.
Thank you!
Bob

No dont do that, you need to ground one of the wires off the harness to get it started. IIRC its a yellow with blue tracer. go to the newbies guide, download the FSM and look at the wiring diags...

Thanks Steve! I've got the wires for the clutch safety switch figured-out, along with the transfer case and reverse light wiring, I was just thinking it would be nice to get rid of all of the extra wiring instead of zip-tying it to the frame, make it a bit cleaner install. But I guess I'll just tie it up out of the way. I see you're at 485K, I'm not far behind at 408K. Gotta love these trucks!

Its only 1 wire that nees grounding, if you figured out the other wiring then yeah, pull that harness and route wire to the clutch switch. FWIW, I dont have mine in there and it is just grounded. Remote start should be disabled until you have a solution for it.

Yeah, at 486k and counting. Runs better now then it ever did in the 1st 300k. Stiction eliminator in the oil and the ATF/2SO mix in the fuel.

I cant speak for an 04.5, but I'm just wrapping up a 48re-g56 swap. My truck is an 06 with an nv273 electric transfer case. I **** canned the whole 48re wiring harness and used the g56 harness. the transfer case works as it should, but im still working on reverse lights. like you i didnt want all those plugs hanging around for nothing. I tapped into the yellow/blue safety wire on the firewall side of the plug rather than the tranny harness.
