There all about the same motor but there were changes in 04, half year up went up to 325 and torque to 600, I would get an 04.5 and up.

2003:

California trucks 235hp/450(or so) ft-lbs
SO trucks 250/450
HO trucks 305/555

CA or SO: 47re auto or nv4500
HO nv5600 only

2003.5
48re replaces the 47re and is an option behind ALL engines

2004.5
ALL trucks 325/600
More power came via 4" exhaust, third injection event minor air flow improvements in the head, bigger compressor wheel and electronic wastegate on the He351 turbo.

2005
325/610, in tank lift pump.

The two biggest problem areas with the CR are the lift pumps and the injectors. The lift pumps on the 2003-2004.5 are AWFUL and failed with great frequency. In fact Dodge does not even make them anymore, now any failed LPs get in tank lift pumps. Much better IMHO.

The injectors really are not the problem, it was the piss poor filtration that dodge offered in the early 3rd gens. Fleetguard (cummins filtration) has corrected the problem by offering a 7 micron fuel filter instead of the original 10 micron filter. JMHO the CR should have a 2 micron filter... hope this helps some..

My 04.5 has been rock solid for me. Tows, plows snow...... Did have the engine mounted lift pump die but it was replaced in tank for free. Also, I have replaced pretty mch all u-joints and I think my wheel bearing on the front left side is going.

What about an 06? that is the newer body style, and the mega cab, but still has the 5.9 HO. I just bought one over the week end and love it.

I have had an 03 and an currently own an 05.

I actually preferred the way the 03 drove, always felt as though it had better throttle response. I liked the fact that the kick down cable was a cable as opposed to the TTVA on the 05+ models.

That being said, the 03 was definitely a bit louder under the hood than the 05 and seemed to run a big rougher most of the time.

If I had to buy another truck, I would probably get an 04.5 model, but I don't think you can go wrong either way.

if your looking at making huge power get an 03 0r 04 HO cause the third injection event on the 04.5 and up start to get in the way of making good power
