Check valve adjustment. Suspect one is loose.
Does it feel rough as in a miss? does it pull up smoothly during accel?? Any smoke??

This may sound stupid but Ive had a knock in my 99 for almost a year, kinda idled rough, no smoke. I checked and checked the valves to no end. Well we hooked up a big trailer two weeks ago and made the trip through the mountains. I noticed when we got there the truck was running smooth. I'd been babying it for fuel economy and must have coked up an injector or 2. Lesson learned.

Definitely top end, almost like a valve is hanging up. I would take the valve cover off and inspect before driving it much more.

Valve meets piston not a good time run the valves intake is .10 and exhaust is .25 if I'm not mistaken if any are .05 to .10 off u have a valve hanging open most likely due to carbon build up or faulty springs

Had a motor that the previous owner starved the motor of air and oil and it was the number 6 cylinder wrist pin. It ran fine and didn't smoke but made a god awful sound. Pull the piston and the cylinder wall all scratched up. You can have it milled down and put a sleeve in that cylinder if that's the case.

Hey all Im new to the forum so Hi. Ive got a stange knock that I only hear @ higher rpms around 1800 or so and under load. Can not duplicate in driveway. I have checked my valve lash 4 times after engine has sat over nite to cool. In-.010 Ex-.020 according to my cummins isb repair manual. Also checked push rods all ok. Do u think that it mite be an injector cause im about to buy some 75over injectors this week. The VP was replaced by PO has appox 28k on it now. Scaned for DTC came up empty

GIJOE I too have been chasing a miss in my own truck. If you search rough idle, engine miss, knock, etc you can read about everybody else's problems and get some pretty good ideas. Welcome to the forum.

Since listening to everybody on here I have run 2 cycle oil in mine. Especially after installing a new vp figured couldn't hurt. With your truck not throwing a code makes it hard to pin point a problem. I search on here for hours and almost went into depression with all I read everything from bad main to dirty fuel.

I have bout same knock... When it started I was just driving a black top road going 55mph. My buddy heard it and I clutched it and it died but turned key off n on bumped starter fired up like nothing was wrong except the knock. When ya crack #6 injector line and it goes away. Took pan off and checked rod bearings n while I was in there I replaced them. But they looked great. I then checked to see if had slack on wrist pin, they all seemed good and then got an old inj. Pump that was weak swapped out and then primed and stared it, at first it had a slight knock but not bad at all as it ran it got worse, checked lines n was still on #6 cylinder. Before I pulled engine appart I swapped out injectors and reran valve lash. The # 3 also kinda quiets the knock, but rest of them don't change it. Oh and cut oil filter open didn't see any metal... I'm to the point of very frustrated! Can anyone see anything that sticks out?

Mine is making the same knock. I've already checked the valves and they are perfect adjustment. Pulled the tranny and the flex plate is good too. The sound is a lot more noticeable when you crawl underneath the truck, that's why I was thinking flex plate but its fine. The truck runs and starts perfect but it's got a loud knock in it..any suggestions? I'm checking the injectors next to get them tested. I bought the truck with a blown turbo seal and I had to flush out the intercooler because there was oil in it. Could it be that the injectors are gummed up with oil??
