Hey all, I picked up my truck from Relentless for a new transmission on Friday. While it was there I asked Chris to check for the fuel leak. When I picked it up Chris said the injector sleve was leaking and showed me how the sleve works.
I guess my question is how in the heck does something that is torqued down like that develop a leak?
I am spoke with another mechanic who thinks it is the injector line leaking. Any ideas? Either way I know I have to fix it but still scratching my head on why a hard part like those could develop a leak.
Should I be looking at replacing all of them as PM?

Stuff happens!! I believe you speak of a leak where injector line is connected to crossover tube. There is a Oring on the tube that detoriates or is damaged during injector install. Replace all Orings. Get the correct size from a hydraulic shop. Parts stores and Cummins will have a sugar buzz selling them.

So you think it is just an O-ring and not the tuibe itself?

first, swap the crossover tubes and make sure it is indeed the tube leaking, if the leak moves then you know its the tube.

if it does leak in another cylinder, then swap o-rings, and see if the leak follows,

usually its a o-ring, or a marred surfice, because the tubes are not crush able like they were on the older models.

Anyone know what size or part number on the O-rings? Its no biggie as I can pull it down and match them up, I am just hoping to have some on hand when I tear it down.
Thanks for all of the replies so far David

you simply call up cummins/freighliner dealer and give them your engine serial number, and then tell them you want cross-over tube orings. as for a diameter idk.

I had a couple crossover tubes leaking and replacing the O-rings didn't work for me. I had to replace the tube. The new tubes come with O-rings. They run less than $20 each, so if you just need a couple it isn't too bad.

I have no problem just replacing them but dealer wants $50 each for them. Cummins and diesel suppliers are all the across Houston from me and neither will sell to me over the phone claiming they cannot take credit cards from 1st time buyers. Apparently CC fraud is killing them.

DAP has them for about $20 + shipping and there is an Ebay-er that I bought mine from for a little bit less. I bought from Ebay because I didn't know DAP had them. Doh.

New cummins crosstubes are more than $20.00 each unless there was a price drop from over four years ago. Cummins dealer did offer me used ones for $16.00 each, so he was not concerned bout being damaged. My 6 Orings cost 66 cents for six. That is $0.66 at hydraulic shop. The part # varies by hydraulic vendor. And they still good after 80,000 miles so don't start yelling about wrong material. Next time I use the ones in my trusty O ring kit.

Just posting what I paid for mine a couple months ago. Less than $20. Worked great, no more leaks. And these were new crosstubes in OEM packaging.

I guess what I don't understand is they are steal and compressed in the injector and line. I dont see where they would wear and they do not crush, so why would it need to be replaced. now O-rings on the other hand I can understand.

I'll know more once I get itno it.

The crosstube has a shoulder on it that contacts a corresponding area in the crosstube hole. When I pulled out my leaking crosstubes the shoulder part of the crosstube had some abraded area like it had been rubbing. My thought it was caused by vibration of the engine and such. When I put the tube back in apparently the rough area didn't seal completely causing a small leak.

That's what I think anyway. New tubes took care of the problem, but new O-rings did not.

I have found a source from a buddy who has one on his shelf and a # 3 injector line if that is the culprit. I may have to order more but for now if I can stop #3 i'll be able to see if any of the others are leaking.

Unless they are leaking now there is no need to replace them. There was a TSB regarding crossover tubes, however, 2001 yr. was not a issue. I believe it was 98.5. or below serial #56462592.

I am a believer in changing crossover tube o-rings while your/there in to it.
