Hello all.
Just bought my first Cummins.
2006 5.9 CCLB. Has 102k miles. Automatic.
So it did have a tuner but doesn’t come with it.

looking to do some upgrades in the near future and what are some must haves for a 5.9

I plan on getting a tuner in the future.

Also what are some common issues to look for going forward?

thanks in advanced for any and all help.

What transmission should it have? What are some weak points in the transmission?

Should be the 48re. I have never had a tuner only 140k Miles on the truck and it still feels like it’s about to give out. As far as things to watch out for I’m not exactly sure

Gotcha. Well I do have a warranty on it for 5 years or 100,000 miles so if the transmission does give out I wouldn’t be to worried.

Nice truck! Awesome find with only 102k miles. Like already stated, trans is the weak link.

What is the weak link in the transmission? Is there a fix or it’s just a overall weak link. Because if there is a way to fix it I’m all about that.

The weak link in the transmission is that it’s a gas transmission that’s been slightly modified to run behind a diesel and can’t handle the torque of the diesel.

The fix is to have it rebuilt by a specialist to withstand the torque. This is not a poor mans hobby and you will definitely have to pay to play.

The other way is, drive it as it is. Other drove their Ram´s so much miles without issues...
Don´t tune it to the death.

Welcome to Cumminsforum and congrats on the truck...

start with this thread... Newbies guide to your new to you truck

the list of must haves and must do...

1) Swap all the fluids, details (for my truck anyways) here -> 50k Service & Costs
2) Get one of these (or similar) asap and install it -> VP MAX Under Intake Filter System CR
3) Swap the fuel filter for a Baldwin pf7977 & continue using it
4) Adjust the valves
5) Buy the recommended Dex III/Merc non-synthetic AFT & TCW3 2 stroke oil, add 12 oz of the ATF to 20 oz of the 2SO and dump into full tank, then use 8/24 moving forward
6) Resist the go-fast goodies until you have a good handle on the truck and know what will break things.

Congratulations on the new purchase. I recently picked up an 03 5.9 HO with 113k miles on it myself (red truck too) completely stock except for the exhaust.
As others have stated, 48re are the weak points, try to resist the temptations of throwing bolt on power until you get a proper build plan.

I have heard if you don’t maintain the fuel system regularly it can be bad for the injectors. Better fuel filtration is recommended. Fass and Air dog both have pumps. There is a system that is added in the fuel lines without a pump. It uses the stick pump. Whatever suites your mode I would just say get something.

Using a Baldwin PF7977 fuel filter is best for the OEM filter housing.
Adding additional filtration is needed to get the best use from the injectors, a water separator, and a 3-micron fuel filter.
Many different kits out there. The OEM lift pump is good for up to 500HP or so, and is reliable.
10psi at idle and anything 3psi or more at WOT is all you need.

Congratulations, that is a great looking truck (and beard :) :) )

I also just got my 1st Ram diesel, a 2008, 2500, a 5.9 and 130,000 miles. It is in the shop getting fluid and filter changes and a complete eyeballing of everything. No plans to trick out, just pull trailers.

Jaydub, good luck and enjoy your truck

I thought they stopped the 5.9 in 07. I was thinking they went to the 6.7 in 07 1/2

Yes for sure be nice to that transmission. Do not neglect fluid/filter changing. Only 110k miles on my 07 Laramie, been battling, the p0868 low line pressure code popping up. Did literally a dozen different things, and it seems happy for now. Sorta scared to try camper and boat this summer. I have a programmer, but, rarely use it for any more than mileage, and, diagnostics. All the rest of the truck is stock. I really like the 5.9 diesel. Been a dynamite engine. Thanks for the tips on the fuel filter guys. I better look into that. I've been lucky thus far. I had one injector go out, but, no other issues with the engine. That's why I bought it.......but yeah, trying to trick it out, can be mighty tricky.
