Started driving home today from a 700 mile trip. The tach started to read very erratic 200 rpm then 800 rpm back to 0 then 1500 rpm and etc. After driving several hours on a very bumpy road thru TN, KY and Illinois the tach stop reading and the "alt Gen" light came on. What is confusing the volt meter showed 14 volts charge and continued this all the way home from when this started 200 miles ago. The battery never went down. I turned off the engine and restarted okay. Help!

Thanks!http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/images/smilies/surrender.gif

Bad cam sensor might explain the tach not working, don't know about the alt. light.

The cam sensor does nothing for the tach function on a 98.5, could be your crank sensor or tone ring. Is it in limp mode? Any codes?
