I have a 96 Ram 3500 4x4 12 valve cummins with a recently rebuilt 47RE trans. The truck has recently been condemned, but I have a buddy with a 2001 Ram 2500 4x4 24valve cummins, that is in need of a transmission. From what I can tell, they are both 47RE trans for 1996 and 2001, I am just wondering what changes will need to be made to the trans for a successful swap? Electronics? Bell housing? Valve body? Any help and insight would be appreciated.

first issue is size of splines may differ.
If that is not a issue. The electronics (in trans) from the 01 must be installed in the 96. The wiring and sensors are different.

Ok thanks for the input! I will likely consult the shop that rebuilt the trans before proceeding, but figured I would ask the questions here first before diving too deep into it.

As long as he has a 3 pin neutral safety swith the swap will be easy. You will have to pull the valve body and take out the 96 wiring harness and put the 01 harness in it. Use a 97-99 gov sensor with the BD diesel transducer conversion harness and your good. The earlier transducer is a better design

If his case has the 4 pin NSS sonnax makes a conversion for that too.

On a 2wd things changed during those years. The speed sensor moved to the rear end from the overdrive section. Just make sure the plugins on the transmission are the same number and location. If not you might have to swap the overdrive section housing. I have no idea if this applies to a 4x4 or not.
