Hello, I am Wanting to Cummins swap my 1985 dodge crew cab short bed. I just acquired a 1991 non intercooled donor. The truck hit a tree and damaged the bumper, radiator and steering wheel.

wanting to do a complete dash swap and fix the steering wheel. wondering If anyone has a link or info on doing This, heard it was intensive.

wiring plan is to take pictures and label each wire when/where unplugged. Planning on using the wiring harness from the donor. Any input on this?

questions on intercooling, I’ve read that 2nd & 3rd gen intercooler are the way to go, also some people are running 6.0 or 6.7 power stroke intercooler. I found this online Intercooler Charge Piping Kit For 89-91 Dodge Ram Cummins 5.9L Diesel does anyone have any expierence with this

im Not Looking for massive power but I do tow a decent amount such as boats and enclosed car trailer. my build plan while The engine is out is -

Dowl pin reinforced
Crank up fuel screw free
Governor spring replaced
Aftermarket turbo intake
Thd fuel pen
Hvlp fuel supply - low pressure piston lift pump
front seal/cover plate gasket
hx35 turbo

online someone said its necessary/highly recommended to replace the alternator with a single wire alternator, is it okay to not do this? 136A Denso Style Alternator 5.9 Cummins 1-Wire (2227SE)

im mostly nervous about the dash work and wiring and wondering if anyone could provide links or honestly Any advice. this is the biggest vehicle project I’ve attempted.

thanks!

The last thing you want to do is to reuse the Dodges wiring, it's undersize and with the old fusible links always causes problems. The dash wiring in the Crewcab doesn't need to be swapped out.

The 1 wire alternator is the way to go, i'm getting one for the Conversion I just finished. I had one on the Fummins I just sold for 6 years.

The only wiring you need for the Dodge diesel truck is the cables and solenoids for the gridheater. Just put them on a Momentary switch and then they will always work when you need them.

Picked up an old air force rig huh? very nice.

Why swap the axles? I would run them, convert to manual locking for the front.

I think an overdrive is one of the desirable things to have on a Cummins truck. Especially if the diff's have 4.10's or deeper.
I would keep an eye out for a 47rh. or do a NV4500 swap. Or if money is no object a ZF-547 or ZF6-750

Where in AK are you?.

Okay, so use the 85’s wiring harness, yeah the alternator seems nice for sure just wondering where I can save a penny here or there! Just wanted to make sure it’s worth it.

The 85 is a 1 ton, already locking hub up front on Dana 60s. The donor has a Dana 70 in the back, I could see if the gear ratio matches not sure what it’s geared at yet. Tranny swap is definitely a future to do, just wanting to get her running decently to start with.

I'm in Juneau. I've seen two of the same club cab dodges. Both were cummins swap, one guy in town has one.

There is a way to install a self exciting regulator to our alternators. There is a thread on this forum about it, but I can't find it right now. That might be a cheaper avenue.
Or else PA performance has a lifetime warranty on their one-wire alternators. and they are very good to deal with.

I suspect with bigger tires, 3.31 or 3.54 would be fine with the Cummins/727.

I run a D60 rear in one of my Cummins trucks because that's what I found a used locker for.

I’ll probably just order one, just trying to get a list going and start making some orders.
