So I bought my 2003 with 135k miles. Right away I noticed the transmission was not OEM.

I got a hold of the previous owner because it was acting up and found he put a suncoast transmission in at about 90k.

At 139k and 2 weeks after having a goofy 4-5 shift ended up going out fully having to get towed home. We put a Jasper transmission in it with a shift kit and triple disk torque converter.

Needless to say, while driving from Minnesota to Colorado...it went again, this time it had 19k miles on it. Jasper replaced it no questions asked.

Now 2 weeks and 3700 miles later...I have no 1st or 2nd. I called Jasper, and they will be putting another one in under warranty again but this is getting old and the down time is getting expensive. I also asked what went wrong on the last one and the bearing on the input shaft failed.

The goofy 4-5 shift has followed all 3 transmissions and started after I had the system flushed at a local shop. So obviously its not the transmission...my buddy who is a mechanic and very good with diesels can't figure it out. He put a Jasper in another Cummins and the customer has the same issue now.

Any ideas?? I've thought about pulling the cooler line and drilling out the check ball. When we put in the transmission at 139k we put a new cooler in and plan to put another one in along with the one on the side of the block.

All coolers should be replaced during each trans replacement.(maybe you did the first time?) Im surprised jasper is warrantying them unless they dont know coolers werent changed. You have either a 47re or 48re, meaning you dont have a 4-5 gear issue as you only have a 4spd trans. Are you using the proper fluid? Id flush all lines and replace ALL coolers. Look for restricted lines. Id also replace the trans line with the check ball rather than drill it. It will drain back overtight and a weak and slow engagement into gear is nothing anyone likes to hear and feel.

As far as jaspers work quality, the last torq shift we put in died after 8 miles. We pulled the pan and found the solenoid in the pan. They forgot to use hardware to install it... Id pull the pan and look for parts that should be in use before sending it back. If you have a 1-2 shift issue, could be more of a mechanical failure rather than stupidity you can see as the 47/48re dont use shift solenoids. Good luck, sometimes yoy find a few bad remans before finding a good one

Sounds like your "4-5" shift is overdrive lock up engagement which can be very quick witted and firm which is particularly normal for a stock trans. They also tend to unlock and lock quick sometimes too.

Looks like the common denominator on failures you're having is Jasper. Maybe you just found your problem.

You also have no 4-5 shift, it's only a 4 speed. You're feeling the converter lock up as a "fifth" gear.

Not so much the case as the Jasper seeing how the 1st transmission that took a dump was a suncoast.

Then its the 3-4 shift. It shifts into then out of and back into and has done it on 3 transmissions. I don't know what it did on the original OEM transmission from the factory.

All this started when I had the system flushed and bands adjusted.

The last 3 transmissions have had shift kits and triple disk converters. Theres a company here in Minnesota that rebuilds 47&48re's tells you to drill out the check valve prior to installing their transmission.

I sold my powerjokes because the motors were unreliable and now it seems I'm having the same issues with transmissions on the Cummins.

I'm debating on putting a 5r110 behind it because my last 2 powerjokes had 192k and 2617know on them.

The Suncoast had about 50k on it and you don't have a clue how it was treated, right? So hard to count that.

Count what you've had, and that's Jasper. Find a good builder and you won't have any issues.

A 5R110 would be more headache than it's worth, I'm not sure they've ever gotten the tuning figured out for those in swaps.

Maybe jasper just keeps rebuilding the wear parts and slapping the same old valve body back on it.
I think the problem is either the od shift solenoid, or torque converter lockup solenoid, I'm not sure based on your description.
The trans starting in 3rd may be that the governor pressure solenoid is also toast.
Whoever does the next trans for you needs to replace these parts, or put on a valve body from one of the big name builders.

"mama says, stupid is doing the same thing over again, expecting a different result."

Obviously you have warranty, and these things arent cheap. but SERIOUSLY, could be your cooler, lines, or maybe, just maybe, the people building it
