My neighbor is getting tired of hearing about souped up truck, and wants me to help him soup his up. He has a 94 12V complety stock. It's a stick longwheelbase single cab. He want mainly to improve the milage, about 19mpg now. The question is what can i do to it? I have no clue about the 12V so guys help me out.

pretty much all you can do in your own garage is straight pipe it and put on a cold air intake, turning up the injection pump will decrease your mileage, im sure others will chime in:thumbsup

Um....Fuel Plate Dynomite Diesel has a budget fuel plate that works great for 100 bucks. Gauges for sure, Pyro, Boost, Straight Pipe if you can or go to a 4" exhaust, run the valves, AFE intake progaurd 7, and maybe injectors but not sure if they hurt the mileage on a 12v

:agree2: the four inch exhaust and intake would be especailly helpful for mileage

THe only difference between 12v and 24v is the number of valves which really means that generally the 24v has more power(a little) but the 12v has better MPG( a little ) to the best of my knowledge....

my 91 with the "custom" exhaust and a "custom" cold air intake consistently gets 23 highway and 19 city, and no, that is no load of crap:thud:

Block off the waste gate (free), buy a #10 fuel plate off ebay for 60 bucks, go with DDP 1 (50hp) for best mileage and advance the timing to 16.5* on the stock HG. The truck isn't going to be a drag racer set up like that, but the stock clutch will still survive at that power level proabably upwards of 350rwhp especially if you throw in a 3k GSK and it should pick up probably 3-5 mpg with the injectors and timing. If he wants to do more then mabye go with DDP 2's (75hp) and ddp DV's. It will still get the good milage but stuff starts getting expensive at that point, because your going to have to upgrade the clutch, and to go any further that than you're going to run out of turbo, with is expensive and you'll need head studs to hold down the boost of a bigger turbo.

what does blocking off the wast gate do. I don't even know what the waste gate is.. Can I get any brand #10 fuel plate, and How hard are those to put on? How about injector installation? I know how to change timing on a 85 silveraldo but no cummins... So were talking 4inch turbo back exhaust, some kinda improved air intake, fuel plate?, 50hp injectors? and blocking of waste gate? whats ya'lls guess on $$, time, and milage improvements? Thanks

the waste gate is the thing in the turbo exhaust housing that opens to allow exhaust gasses to be routed around the turbine, basically when it opens, then the turbo quits making more boost. So if you block off the line that feeds it, the turbo will continue to create more boost. The truck will have a line going from the back of the AFC housing (on top of the injection pump... which is on the driver's side of the engine block) and goes up over the top of the engine then down to the wastegate. All you have to do is put a shut off valve inline and keep it shut. Or even easier, cut the line put in bolts on both sides and use clamps to seal them off. That should take like 10 minutes.

You probably want to set the timing to 16.5*. timing is a bit tricky to do, probably better off just paying a shop to do it. Usually costs about $150 for a good job.

Fuel plate- $59
injectors- $474
timing- $150
-----------------------
total- $683

time wise, the injectors and fuel plate will probably take a first timer maybe 3 or 4 hours tops. They are both super easy jobs, once you know what ur doing it would probably only take an hour or two to do both.

there is no telling what your exact results will be, because every truck is different and won't net the exact same results. If you were really un-lucky you would maybe only see a 2 mpg gain, pretty average would be about 3-4mpg gain, and if you got really lucky you could jump up to 25mpg our so.

I would not suggest blocking off your waste gate, that is a really good way to overspin the turbo, plus the factory turbo's will lose their efficiency after about 30-32 psi anyway, anything after that is going to be superheated air, i would suggest going with a boost elbow so that you can control when the waste gate opens, the budget kit from dynomite diesel has a boost elbow in the kit.

his 94 will not flow enough fuel to over boost the turbo on a #10 plate and 50hp injectors. having the stock 131 dv's is a big limitation.
but ya a boost elbow is also a good solution.

I wouldn't be very worried about the turbo though. My buddy with a 96 can make over 50lbs on his stock turbo and its still in one piece. I'm always telling him that he is just losing tons of power by running the much boost on a hx-35, but he doesnt seem to get it. He has ARP studs but still goes through HG's like mad and cant figure out why. Hm... i wonder if over 100lbs of drive pressure has anything to do with it... haha

You sure about that? I guess I better tell Matt Wells his stock 160 pump thats running 11s must not be flowing much fuel :l

What does the fuel plate do? Can it be done w/out injectors? or do they work together hand in hand. The injectors may not be cost effective at 500 bucks. But if I can build an intake for 60bucks like I did for my truck it will be cost effective. as will be getting rid of the factory exhaust. I think I can con my neighbor in spending 400 on an intake and exhaust. I just don't have any knowledge on the fuel plate and injectors. thanks again guys

I don't know anything about Matt Wells truck but if it is actually a stock pump then it defiantly doesn't have 50hp injectors which is what i was talking about. He probably runs 11 hole injectors that has a flow rate similar to a fire hose... haha. And i really doubt that his pump has stock DV's and a stock fuel plate

Well no it doesn't have a stock fuel plate. The truck has been heavily "Garmonized" The 160 pump has never been off the truck, he still has stock 131 dvs and barrels and 370s (aren't they like a 90hp injector) Runs are on #2 only.
