Here is a full write up on putting 07, 08, 09 tail lights on an 06 or earlier truck. Not a cheap endeavor but it can be done. First is a list of parts with prices and where to buy. And yes I have a dually tailgate on a SRW truck. It was like that when I bought it.

Tail lights $46.95 Ebay
Light sockets and bulbs $42.00 LMCtruck.com
07 wiring harness plugs $103.52 factorymoparparts.com
Reese converter boxes $49.98 ea. Autozone

Before and After

The first thing I noticed when I removed the old tail light and put the new ones on just to check the fit was this. There are two line up pins on the light and the distance between the new ones is farther apart and the new pins are a little bit bigger. And they will not fit into the plastic grommets on the truck.

So I swapped the pins. The new ones come out with a screw driver and the old ones come out with a 10mm deepwell socket. I had to drill out the holes in the lights because the threads on the old pins are a little bigger and I didn't want to crack the new lights. I drilled them out with a #7 drill bit. I know what your thinking, if the pins are farther apart then they wont line up with the holes in the truck bed. Well don't fear. Dodge put two sets of holes in the bed for some reason. Just move the plastic grommet to the bottom hole.

Now about the fit. The lights are made in China so they didn't fit perfect as the pics will show.

Got a little hang over here.

Got a big gap here.

So I took some washers and tapped them to the truck to space the light out and make the fit better. I couldn't do anything about the screwdriver gap.

Next the wiring. Here is the converter and how i mounted it. I just took a self tapping screw and drilled it to the truck.

Then you cut off the old plug and wire everything up. Here is the wire color codes for the 06 truck.

driver side of the 06:
Pin 1 - White/Yellow - Tail lights
Pin 2 - none
Pin 3 - Black/Green - Ground
Pin 4 - White/Tan - Brakes
Pin 5 - White/Dark Green - Left Turn
Pin 6 - White/Light Green - Reverse

passenger side of the 06:
Pin 1 - White/Gray - Tail lights
Pin 2 - none
Pin 3 - Black - Ground
Pin 4 - White/Tan - Brakes
Pin 5 - White/Yellow - Right Turn
Pin 6 - White/Light Green – Reverse

Pigtails and sockets.

Wired up ready to tape up or use heat shrink tubing. I just used tape.

Disclaimer:
Everything works fine except. When you press the brake while the blinker is blinking the blinker blinks normal for about 3-4 seconds then it blinks really fast. When you let off the brake it blinks normal again. No biggy

What size and type do you think? Should it go before or after the converter?

Maybe something like this...I had to install one on each side when I put leds in mine..I would say after your box,it takes about 2 mins to install them so you could try before and after.

So you just used one box right ?

What size did you use? I used two boxes but you could use one, just mount it in a central location and run wires to it. It was easier to use two but more expensive.

Someone mentioned using an electronic flasher control from LMC truck and that might stop the fast blinking problem or use resitors. Any one tried the electronic flasher?

Better question is why? The 06 lights look way better than the bubble butts.

I found out the the 06 trucks don't have a plug in blinker/flasher control. There is just a clicker in the steering column for the sound. So you cant add an electronic flasher control. I added some 50 ohm resistors and it took care of the fast blinker problem.
