Hey guys I'm asking for help again because this site is the best ever and helped alot in the past. My dads 06 was an over the road trailer hauler and has 550,000 miles on her! go cummins! but now the exhaust smokes and smells of raw fuel. I'm suspecting a stuck open injector because ive got no codes. When I had another injector failure lasy year I had a code and replaced it and all was well. This time around no code. with my laser temp gun the number one cylinder exhaust manifold bank is around 80 degrees cooler than the rest. So my question is: am i on the right track? stuck injector? can i clean it or replace it? and the oil level isn't going up. thanks in advance and I hope you can help! ps anyone know of a smaller micron filter made for these trucks that is stock size and can replace normal fuel filter?

Use Fleet guard filter only. it has good water blocking ability. We offer a 2 micron spin on filter to get the particulate matter lower. It mounts under the intake horn. We can test injectors if you need. A good scanner may give you the results you need.

park the truck.

:agree2: park the truck untill repaired.

The Baldwin BF7977 is a 5 micron absolute filter for the canister and is also a good water seperator.

In those 550K miles, are these the FIRST injector problems you've seen ?

You've been running stock fuel filtering this whole time ?

I assume he has not had ANY kind of programmer on the truck ?

Sorry for the questions, I'm just very interested in how a 550K mile truck is set up...

Well shes very stock and had aggressive maintenance and shes a cummins! Stock filtration too! It has a reserve 90 gallon tank and is still using stock head gasket, inj pump. Its had a power steering pump and one new injector. Impressive but still broke down with latest problem. Raw fuel out of pipe and no codes. Is a stuck injector a likely culprit or a rare occurence?

The injector could be sticking open or it could be cracked. If the injectors have never been replaced I would replace the whole set.

Leaking nozzles in these is far too common, poor quality dirty water contaminated fuel and the low quality metalurgy used in the original injectors.

the new in Bosch/Cummins boxes only injectors are an upgrade design and metallurgy

the Baldwin PF7977 is the best OEM cannister filter made for these
5 microns absolute, with an average efficiency of 99.31%. Water stripping: 97-99% free water, 92-95% emulsified water. And it has a dirt holding capacity of 25.5 grams. 509.1 sq in of filtration media.

still doesn't stop all the particles that will jam or wear injector parts or stop all the water.

large capacity CAT or Donaldson addons

I think you are on the right track with a bad injector. You can remove the valve cover and remove one wire on the injector you think is bad and see if your problem stops or use a scanner that shuts down the injectors one by one and see what happens.

At 550k you are well beyond the expected lifetime of the CR injectors. Don't bother testing and messing around looking for 1 bad one, replace them all.

To answer your question, yes it is likely an injector hung open. Maybe more than 1.

Don't bother messing around with rebuilds and /or testing at this point unless you really want to tear your engine down. Case in point, I ruined a freshly rebuilt engine by putting in remans. Less than 5000 miles on it and one went bad and scored a cylinder. About $6000 later, after buying another set of injectors (new bbi this time), honing cylinder and new set of rings, and having the head machined to fix the warped valves (do not know if this was directly a result of the bad injector/s) I finally have a good engine.

Lol I didn't even look at the date before I posted, whoops. I'm not sure why this came up on my page being so old, but hopefully my experience helps someone else out in their future decision.
