how the he'll do I take my truck out of overdrive. On my 02 silverado I had before it had 1, 2, 3, OD so in thecity I would always drive in 3rd. My new 05 diesel truck has only1, 2 then drive... W/a tow/haul button, which I'm assuming works like my chevy used to raising the rpm before shifting and using the torque converter as a little engine brake.

I have only had my new truck 4 days

The 05's are kinda the step child of the TH function. You have no OD lockout at all. The TH feature is a more aggressive lockup and shifting program but it will still go into OD.

Depending on what you need, there are ways to get the functionality.

Cycling the TH button will drop it into drive and lock the TC. It will stay there until your acceleration has dropped off the upshift.

If you can keep your speed at or above 55 mph shifting to manual 2nd will drop it into drive and keep it there until speed drops under 50 mph.

BD Power also makes an OD lockout kit the allows you to control OD like the older trucks and not loose the aggressive shifting and lockup program.

There is a flash for the ECU theat will make the TH button just an OD lockout but you loose the aggressive lockup and shifting.

Since you just got the truck drive it for a bit and play with the TH features and see if they work like you want. :thumbsup

I will try that. I just think its bad to tow a big enclosed trailer in overdrive. Doesen't it heat up the transmission more?

I will soon get a Quadzilla Commander (I think) (I may just get analog gauges) so that I can monitor everything and I guess I can just play with the T/H button and hope that the trans temp does not get out of hand.

Does this year cummins have problems with the lift pump that I hear so much drama about?

You will be fine in OD and use a lot less fuel. The trans is made to tow at GCVW in OD. You start running into problems when you get up over 30k GCVW. Then the trans is just too small.

TC locked in OD your trans temps should be relativelt low unless you have a trans problem.

The 05's have an in tank lift pump. It has proven to be quite a bit more reliable then the filter mounted units.

AWESOME INFO THANK YOU!!! It makes me happy I dont have to worry about the lift pump and that I can tow in OD.

In my chevy it just didn't have enouhg power to tow in OD unless I was on the flats, but then the gas pedal was way down.:

interesting... the one thing I hate about my tranny is no OD lockout. I'll have to go look @ the BD kit...

there is a tsb that reflashes 05s to lock out the OD function
TSB 21-006-07

I just had it done and love it. I tow thru canyons with sled trailer and it always hunting in and out. Got the tsb done and wont shift into OD. mine was under 3/36000 so it was free after a little fighting. Ialso had to point the tsb out to the dealer
Now in "tow-haul" it locks out OD and works normal without

Yes, and it also gets rid of the more aggressive lockup and shifting program. You do not get lockup as soon or as firm as in TH and the shifts are no where near as positive. The flash has its uses but also its drawbacks.

drawbacks would suck, the agressivness of the tow haul mode is a plus. I do recall there being a way to add a switch to lock it out manually, that may be the cheeper way to go but also maybe not the best?

So will the trans last just as long going in and out of OD constantly if I do 50/50 city/highway driving, as opposed to a trans that I can take out of OD? I just figured its more wear and tear in the city.

It'll be fine I guess just keep an EZ foot in the city.

Its not as simple as a switch to lockout OD. You have to get it out of OD first then cancel OD then lock the TC again. Then you have to make sure the ECU does not see to high or too low resistance or it will put the truck in limp mode.

BD power makes a nice little box to do this.

Running in TH in city driving should delay your shift till 45 mph or so so you won't get a lot of shifting back and forth. A plus is the TC locks up sooner id drive also.
