04 front drive shaft questions

912 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Lowding
I just purchased an 04, it didn't have the front drive shaft on it. It shifts into 4wd and the lights show up, so I'm hoping I just need to get a drive shaft.

I just want to make sure there is nothing I should be looking for, as for a reason why there wasn't one. I bought the truck from a wholeseller who doesn't know the history of it.

Also, am I best off just finding a refurb drive shaft? Or find an upgraded one? I don't plan on doing anything more of a lift than a front leveling kit.

Thanks in advance.

front drive shaft

Hi
I would say if your not hearing any noises from transfer case or from front axle.
try driveshaft first.
if you want stock AAM shaft, Quad 4 x4 has them new OEM.
looks like their store website is down till tomorrow though.

roy and dan are good guys very knowledgeable about drive train.
if automatic you have to see what size u-joints cups , 1 1/16 or 1 1 1/8 or 1 3/16
type 1 or type 2 shafts.
if manual trans only one choice.
you can find rebuilds all over but I would be careful about quality and core charge probably will apply.
There was a company that had custom stuff on here "doghouse diesel"
They seemed to have good rep.
I would change /check all the fluids and filters if you don't know history.
Good luck

Thanks for the info! I'm gonna change all fluids for sure. The tranny and motor are not original to the truck, they were recently put in. I'm guessing the drive shaft was left out at that point.

I'll check that site tomorrow.
