04.5 flash update problems

23907 Views 13 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Charlz34
Back in October i took my pickup in to have a flash update done. The dealer said it would help mileage and improve the accuracy of the mpg display. I now think this was the biggest mistake i have ever made regarding vehicle maint. On the way home the wts light came on. They reflashed it twice with the same result. They told me it was the injectors and the problem was a result because the new flash could read new codes p1222 and p1223. Perfect timing because the warranty expired 5 months prior. I decided to take it to a diesel specialty shop To have further diagnostic work performed. The result was low flow and pressure from the transfer pump. They recommended an air dog fuel pump To correct this problem. Now 600 dollars later this has not corrected the problem. Check engine codes keep coming up but there is no symptoms of a problem. If anyone has experience or had the same type of issue please let me know any help is appreciated. I don't want to keep spending money trying to track down a problem that is non existent. The current code is p 1223 and p 0148. Please help!!!!!

Flash: Diagnostic Enhancements For Fuel System
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin provides Engine Control Module (ECM) software enhancements to improve
robustness to fuel system issue detection and two new Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's).
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Engine Control Module
(ECM) with new software.
Diagnostic procedures for these new DTC's are included in this Service Bulletin on the last
2 pages which may be printed.
The two new injector Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) for excessive injector return flow
are:
· P1222 - LEAK DETECTION DURING MOTORING
· P1223 - LEAK DETECTION BASED ON QUANTITY BALANCE
**When the fault(s) occur, a solid Wait to Start lamp will illuminate in the cluster along with
chiming 10 times. When the fault goes inactive, it will clear the wait to start lamp with no
chimes**.

Thank you for the helpful troubleshooting of these engine codes.

I still am looking for the answer to why this pickup ran perfectly without issue, then after the flash update at the dealership it continually is generating engine codes. The check engine light is not coming on there are no symptoms. It starts perfectly and has power until the WTS light comes on.

Does anyone think that if I could come up with a non-flashed ECU this could fix all the problems I am experiencing with the engine codes?
have u fixed the problem I have a 04.5 too and have the same problem I bought it and the light wasn't on 2000 miles later I gota a smarty and now I have this problem replace over $500 in sensors please tell me you found the fix to our year
Since my last post I have installed and air dog Fuel preparator system. I was told by the repair shop that the engine was not getting enough fuel. They tested the factory transfer pump and it did not have sufficient flow or pressure. I have not driven the pickup much because the air dog has been very noisy and I am waiting for a replacement pump. The wait to start light was comming on when letting off the throttle from cruising speed. This happened anywhere between 40 and 70 miles per hour.
Sounds like leaking injectors or high pressure connecting tubes to me just my $.02

The guy who owns the shop has talked about those being a possibility. I think that will be next on the list if this problem is not fixed after I replace the airdog pump with a replacement.
What connectors are you talking about can I do that myself I want to do a valve adjustment I'm hearing a ticking coming from the motor could thy be the leak or no
@schliebe - Yes after you replace your Airdog pump I would suggest looking into the injectors you could have a leaking injector or a connecting tube coming loose or something in there.

@S415bmxer - There are high pressure connectors that your fuel lines connect into on the side of the head that connect to your fuel injectors.

Yeah if you have some knowhow working on diesels you should be able to do them and valve adjustments are simple also.

This should help:

VALVE LASH ADJUSTMENT AND VERIFICATION

NOTE: To obtain accurate readings, valve lash measurements AND adjustments should only be performed when the engine coolant temperature is less than 60°C (140°F) .

The 24-valve overhead system is a low-maintenance design. Routine adjustments are no longer necessary, however, measurement should still take place when troubleshooting performance problems, or upon completion of a repair that includes removal and installation of the valve train components or injectors.

Disconnect battery negative cables.
Remove cylinder head cover.
Using the crankshaft barring tool #7471-B, rotate crankshaft to align damper TDC mark to 12:00 O'clock position.
If both number one cylinder rocker levers are loose, continue to next step.
If both number one cylinder rocker levers are not loose, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees.

With the engine in this position, valve lash can be measured at the following rocker arms: INTAKE 1-2-4 / EXHAUST 1-3-5. Measure the valve lash by inserting a feeler gauge between the rocker arm socket and crosshead. If the measurement falls within the limits, adjustment/resetting is not necessary. If measurement finds the lash outside of the limits, adjustment/resetting is required.
VALVE LASH LIMIT CHART

If adjustment/resetting is required, loosen the lock nut on rocker arms and turn the adjusting screw until the desired lash is obtained:
INTAKE 0.254 mm (0.010 inch)
EXHAUST 0.660 mm (0.026 inch) Tighten the lock nut to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) and recheck the valve lash.
Using the crankshaft barring tool, rotate the crankshaft one revolution (360°) to align the damper TDC mark to the 12 O'clock position.

With the engine in this position, valve lash can be measured at the remaining rocker arms: INTAKE 3-5-6 / EXHAUST 2-4-6. Use the same method as above for determining whether adjustment is necessary, and adjust those that are found to be outside of the limits.
Install the cylinder head cover.
Connect the battery negative cables.

@S415bmxer Also that could be your ticking or could be your valves could be on the loose side. Hard to tell by not looking at it you know...
I am going to take the pickup into a more reputable dealership later this week for another round of diagnosis @ $104/hr. Yikes!!! Hopefully they can pull the codes and give me a better idea of what is wrong than the non-dealership(diesel performance) shop that I have been taking it to.

I am questioning the notion of a leaking injector because it starts perfect and does not miss at all. Is it possible to still have a leaking injector??

Another clue is that when I throw on the ignition switch, the airdog(fuel pump) turns on along with grid heater(wait to start light) as normal. What is not normal is that the fuel pump does not shut off after a few seconds as it did before the flash was done back in October. The pump runs the full 30 seconds until it times out. This seems like a problem to me.

I will be passing along any help I receive to the dealership when I take it in later this week.
@S415bmxer - I read another post that said the ticking could come from the #4 injector high pressure hard line support could be loose. Better check it because it wears a hole in it and you will have diesel everywhere.
I has these codes took to the dealer they could not figure it out. I asked them to tighten my fill tubes. No more codes this worked for me. 286.00. Good luck
