Help! I have an 03 cummins I purchased recently. The truck runs fine except when you get on it around 2k rpm the turbo seems like it lags and doesn’t build boost. Recently was towing something was going up a hill and when it hit 2k rpm the truck lost all power and blew white smoke out of exhaust. Turned the truck off and turned back on just fine. Doesn’t over heat or anything. Thought the turbo went bad so swapped it out for another but now it did the same thing any suggestions as to what it might be?

No mods, it’s 191k miles
i would think it could be injectors, early common rail injectors aren’t the best longevity wise. but i would wait for someone who’s more experienced to chime in

I had an issue where mine would cut out and act like a slipping clutch above 2000 RPM pulling a heavy load up a hill. I switched IAT & MAP sensors and fixed it so you might try those.

Would it also completely die? Mine lags at 2k rpm with a heavy load after it falls on its face and doesn’t respond till I turn it off and on then works fine again

Throttle control sensor, MAP & MAF sensors. My MAP on my 03 had never been serviced and it was loose. Possible injectors. Try running Lucas cleaner and Lube. I buy that product by the gallon. It works. In a pinch, throw in 1/2 qrt of Tarns fluid in a full tank of fuel and run that to quickly lube the injectors. You can have your oil tested for fuel. If you have fuel in the oil, for sure you need injectors. Also check fuel pressure and make sure the filter is clean and the reservoir emptied of water etc. If you have the original factory 03 fuel pump, replace or get an after market, preferred. If your fuel pump is not getting the job done, the CP3 pump being starved of fuel can burn up. Opps big deal. If any of this stuff is wacky the ECM can try to compensate and do weird stuff. Possible CP3 Pump and the 2 control sensors for the fuel system/. Good hunting. I have done all this, except the CP3 pump and I have 184K.

X2 have fresh engine and fuel system sensors and relief valves. If they are original, it's time to change them. You maybe surprised how much better it runs. Parts store sensors are junk. Buy from a reliable source. I have several bloody T shirts from buying cheap sensors. Geno's Garage comes to mind.

Next check your lift pump and fuel filters. A pressure gauge on the lift pump should be near 10 PSI at idle.
