01 Cummins 24V camshaft sensor

Okay guys I got a code for a camshaft position sensor and won't go away. When I start my truck it runs real rough for about 10 secs then my RPMs drop to zero and my idle levels out and it runs great, but no RPM gauge? And so a little back story, when I first bought the truck guy said it had a bad ecm, and was tuck in limp mode? So he gave me an extra ecm and a pcm and said he pulled them from a junk yard. So I slapped the new ecm he gave me in it and it drove fine. Minus the RPM gauge. So I took it in and got the ecm flashed. But now my problem is when I plug a nice fanny scanner in it, it tells shows me a different vin and says my truck is a 99? My truck is a 01. 1/01 to be exact. So long story short, my question is do you think the place I took it to didn't really flash it? Or if they did, did they not program new ecm to my vin?? And I replaced camshaft sensor twice! Which was a pain!!! So do you think some how some way the ecm is not registered the cam sensor?? Any help would be awesome. Thanks

First figure out what you have. You can not do anything until you do. First loook atthe engine near the starter and see if there is a crank shaft sensor beside the starter. If so the engine has been replaced with a 99, Check the part number on the ECM and report back to tell if it is a 99 or 01. If you have a 99 engine you must have a 99 ECM, harness and the crank sensor, If an 01 engine it will have a different ECM, harness and no crank sensor. Both engines have a Cam sensor but they are differnet.
That is easy, what is the part number on the ecm?
.....336 is an ecm for a 98.5/99, and looks for a crankshaft position sensor, and I do not know that they can be simply reflashed to an 01. Even if they are, they would have to be in good serviceable not defective condition in the first place. ..336 does not work on 01/02
Dont start screwing with wiring you know nothing about, Get the right harness if you have the wrong year harness.. If you have the worng ECM you need to buy the right ECM(correct PN) Use old one as core. You can get luck for $300 or not for 1200.
I do not know about ruin the VP but definitely will not run right if at all. Low lift pump pressure or high AC from alt are the main things that can damage the VP or other electronics.
