I have a 01 24 valve diesel and it will run fine but about every 5 minutes it will start smoking out the tail pipe and at the same time it will not accelerate and most of the time will die.And will not start until you crank on it for a while.I changed the fuel filter and air filter but still doing the same.can anyone help.I was told probably injector pump but is that a symptom of bad injector pump???

Check you fuel pressure?
(Got more that 10 PSI at the VP44 at all times)
Lift Pump Diagnostics

Opps... Do you even have a fuel pressure gauge?
Gauges

Then check for codes?
(P0216, dead pedal, white smoke are good signs that pump is shot)
OBD II Error Codes

Cycle your ignition key on and off 3 times quickly leaving it int eh on position. Write down all the codes until you see PDONE twice.
