RV tips!!

It would be nice to have a helpful RV tips thread. These are just some quick tips I've done on my camper today.

Please add your helpful tips!!

I use a small syringe to add Clorox to our fresh tank. You can check out tables to get your Clorox at a certain PPM if you want to.

The lower trim pieces on my RV were loose and I found one on my driveway as soon as we got the 5er home. I took them off and put a thin bead of silicone on the trim pieces. I then put them back on and wiped off the excess silicone!

You can see the small trim pieces on either side of the reflector in the pic.

We put a clip like the orange one in the pic, on our breakaway cable for ease of attachment to the 5th wheel hitch.

I would like to add a couple of thoughts if I may. Before leaving, check torque on trailer wheels. If on a longer trip, check periodically during trip. Also check torque on 5er hitch nuts & bolts. Our 5er has grease zerks on the shackles, don't forget them. This is probably old hat to most, but worth re-mentioning. The most important thing is this, have a great rving experience. Getting there is 1/2 the fun.

I'm in the process of deciding if I like RV'g so I purchased a 95 model Jayco pop-up that appears brand new. Once I install my spare axle from my dually conversion under it I think I will be in heaven. I agree, the RV/Camper folks need to have their own space.

I like the caribiner idea, thanks for that!

The only recent tip I can offer so far is tires...got some Bridgestone Duravis R250's installed on my fiver and could not be happier. Full steel cap, couldn't wait to ditch the crappy ST trailer tires.

Buy a box of nitrile gloves and USE THEM when you are handling the gray/black water discharge duties.

Buy the drill adapter for the screw jacks and make sure your drill is charged.

Camperman, after getting our new 5er home, I rechecked the lug torques, and believe it or not, several on each tire were not at the proper torque! Then I rolled the camper forward so the tires rotated 180 degrees, and torqued again. Great advice!

One step further on the breakaway cable, you can get these at at some rv dealers and most Farm and Fleet or Tractor Supply. And ebay and Amazon of course. Oh and DON'T just attach to your fifth wheel, a breakaway should be attached to the trick itself. In the commercial world that can get you an out of service violation from an officer.

If you have a new RV, or before taking your first trip on which you'll need heat, I would advise running your RV heating system to burn off the initial "junk" in the heating system.

Because......last night at 2AM the propane-fired central heat came on, and 10 seconds later the smoke detector did it's thing!!!! So there we were doing the fire detector hokey pokey, fanning the thing, and turning on our exhaust fans!!!

After latching your Fiver to the hitch, connect the pig tail, raise the landing gear enough to put all the weight of the trailer on the truck and have the landing gear just off the ground.

Get back in your truck, put it in gear while holding the trailer brakes locked with the brake controller. Put just a little throttle in to check that things are properly engaged.

This check would save the side rails of your truck bed in the event that something was not quit right with the hitch or locking mechanism.
