Riverside Jeep Okay All, I am the o.p., installed the B/D diesel 2wd low unloc differential kit on my truck today in less than an 1/2 hour and it works like a champ. I was happy that that I could use my upfitter switch bank on it also.Big thanks to Electojake! My problem is solved.

Hah!
Drive a Super Duty with a Scorpion while towing in the hills and use the exhaust brake.

Then come back and tell me about it.

If you seriously need to tow & haul (and not just hoon around town) the simple, heavy, un-glamorous, straight six Cummins design can not be beat.

Something is wrong with your truck. I'd take it in to the dealer. My 2014 ram 3500 with 3.42's has a way stronger exhaust brake than the 2015 f350 with 3.55's. It also is a lot faster and stronger pulling trailers. The ford was a bit quicker off the line empty but way less passing power. You might have a dud vgt.

Trowel2013 I'm thinking it could be possible that the VGT isn't running the full range. Since I put my new turbo on my truck (OEM reman, 2 weeks ago) my truck feels stronger and EB works better than before. Watching the VGT % gauge with the new turbo, it ranges from 10%-100%. With the original, I never saw it go bellow 35-40%, and when the EB was engaged it capped out at 98%. I've had the CTS2 installed for almost 2 years, it has always showed those numbers and truck didn't start throwing codes for the turbo until a week before I changed it. So there must be some sort of threshold or something that is allowed by the PCM before you get any CELs regarding the turbo.

Also, I appear to be getting better mpg, not a lot, but better.

Jimmy N. Alright, you can't expect the exhaust brake to work as well with tall gears, but it should still work. As much as I dislike taking a vehicle to a dealer, that may be your best option.

Besides, as others have pointed out earlier, there's something wrong with your pickup if it won't do over 42 mph up a grade. Any grade.
Another reason to take it to the dealer.

There's a short grade nearby which I'd guess is maybe 12%. I'm sure I could start mid hill and accelerate to over 42 mph with my 3500. That's with less power (the C&C is down rated) and a heavier vehicle. Yes, it has a gearing advantage, but not enough to offset the lower output and higher weight.

Mine didn't run worth a crap when I first got it, but at least it has always slowed down just fine. You must've ended up with a complete lemon. Let's hope the dealer can fix it.

Ranprk No Jimmy Upstate NY isn't comparable to the Rockies. and yes, had exhaust brake on in both Auto and full time. I've re geared my Jeep, but I'm not touching this.

Okay, so you have 3.42 gears. We're finally getting much closer to finding out what you actually have.

But if those 650 feet is the elevation difference, it's a measly 5% grade. That's not exactly what we refer to as "straight up" here in the Rockies.
Not even where I lived in CA, with an 8% grade for as many miles, and then it got steep for the last 1.25 miles.

Again, about that exhaust brake that supposedly isn't working; have you turned it on?

Ranprk it's an 18, and about 650 ft of elevation, not all straight up. and yes i did stop today and looked at a SD, I'm not switching back anytime soon. I'm looking into the Stealth Module also. I like the ram, it actually sounds like a diesel compared to the SD. It pulls okay, just not as good as the SD. I've had the durmax and the power stroke. this is my first Cummins. I'm not really gender bias but i have always been partial to the RAMS. I had 98, an 01, and an 04. i switched to Chevy because the early rams rusted in three years, I really like the looks of the RAM, and that it handles the weight way better then the SD, its very comfortable. just doesn't pull as as well and stop as well with a load. I'm done whining, Ill make do, its still a solid truck. oh and it gets way better fuel milage. thanks for the conversation.

Trowel2013 Sounds like something is wrong with your truck Ranprk. I have a 2500, so 3.42 gears and larger than factory tires. I've pulled 17k through back road hills of TN mountains (Cookeville area) and had no issue. Acceleration was more than adequate and EB was strong enough that I rarely needed my service brakes unless I needed to make a complete stop. Oh, and the damn trailer didn't have working brakes (not my trailer or machine, just moving it for a 'friend').

Jimmy N. Okay, a new '18 or a new '19? If it's an '18 you're stuck with 3.42 gears, if not it's 3.73s.

Also, is that with the exhaust brake switched on or not?

Lastly, I think about 42 mph is the slowest mine has ever gone up a hill, and that's with 3.73s and smaller tires. Plus towing a decent load, of course.
You must live on one heck of a hill. What's the elevation difference, so I can figure out the grade?
